hunting bears

I assume you mean black bears? If thats the case use any rifle but the 243 and tough bullets like the Nosler Partition or Barns TSX.

If the .300 is a .300 Win. Mag. I'd use that. Tracking a wounded bear into the brush gets a little tense.
Seriously.
If the .300 is a .300 Savage, use the '06, that's decent for a black bear (but I've seen some seriously large black bear in Idaho a couple of times).

Good luck and be careful. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

if you feel comfortable chasing bears with a small cal. go for it
just remember black bears kill and maim more people than the other types of bears do

I don't care how big of a gun you use, If your shot isn't well placed your going to have a lost and wounded Bear. They are tough. A Bear shot through one lung with a 300 win. will be more alive then a bear shot through both lungs with a .243. Use the gun that you are the most comfortable with and that you can shoot the most accurately. If that would be your .243 use it, but make sure a well constructed bullet is used.

i'm buying a new bear calling gun next week. going back to a 270. maybe 270 wsm. i've killed a few bear's. Riverswild has killed more than me. when i guided from 93 to 97 the hardest bear's i had to find were both shot with a 338. i got rid of my proHunter 300 win mag. got tired of the recoil scope hitting my eye. i would use a 270 or bigger. dont over gun your self. be comfortble with it. i will be shooting 130 tipped trophy bonded shell's. i'll be calling shooting close range.
