I was wondering does anyone have any experience calling black bear? What type of sounds to use ? What time of day is best ? I was thinking of doing tis between morning and evening sits on bait Sorry if this has been covered before but I did a search and came up empty. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

In Oregon you can use bait so you are limited to spotting the bear and then calling them or setting up blind. I have called bears through out the day in the spring time and had the best success in the fall with later afternoon. If they have been feeding all night on berries they are getting hungy and a prey sound my get them out of their resting spot early.

Any prey sound will work and I like jack rabbit squall. You can use a electronic or hand call but the real trick is call for 1 hour in good bear habiat. With a hand call it can be exhausting.

If I am going to be hunting a new area I will use a fawn bleat while working along old skid roads. I will try to sound like a fawn who lost its mom and trying to find her.
I had one bear come down the hill like a boulder on a steep hill. The bear hit the road and I looked at him and he looked at me and at 30 yards he did not fill the scope at 2X. That 100 lb bear sounded a lot bigger when he was coming in. I was kind of glad it was not a 300 pounder.

If you put your search parameters to 2 years ago you may find some information.

Thanks for the reply
I think I may just try it in between sits on bait maybe around 10:30-11 till noon or there abouts.I have seen Wayne Carton call in bears on video and it looks like alot of fun.

If you are working a couple of different baits and have multiple bears coming into a bait you could get a big boar come in if you use a bear cub call, then again you could get momma bear up into your tree.

I don't like the bear cub calls because getting the sow to react may force me to shoot not knowing if she has cubs and that would be illegal in Oregon. For me a game violation will cost me my job so it is not worth the risk.

In Minnesota it's not against the law to shoot momma. It's against the law to shoot a cub though. A lot of people pass on the sows with cubs for some reason. The facts are that by September, the cubs are to the point where they don't need momma to teach them how to hibernate. If they are bright enough to figure out that they need to curl up and fall asleep, they'll survive just fine. For some crazy reason, people think that if they kill mom, the cubs will also die. Not so folks.

I guess that we can shoot a sow here as well. The sow just can't be nursing cubs so if the sow has some 1 year olds with her they are legal to smack.

Is Mama wet or dry?

Very hard to answer (safely).

I like the Wayne Carlton tape very much. Real fun.

Haven't got enough courage to try it yet.

I filled my Wisconsin bear permit by calling in a 473 pound field dressed bear opening day of the season. I have called a few in coyote hunting so I wanted to do it when I had a permit. I scouted and found an area with lots of sign and called for about 40 minutes when I seen it moving toward me fast. A 3 inch 1 ounce slug ended that quickly. I had bait as backup in case a bear wouldn't come to the call. I used a fawn in distress call.
