Your personal best with a rimfire

17 WSM 20 gr at 300 yards High shot was first shot (cold barrel). Shot that went low I had slight breeze in my face. I do not have any more ammo from that lot.

17 HMR, my longest kill was a groundhog @ 275 yds. It just fell over slower than normal. I was on a horse farm where they would not let me use anything bigger. I killed well over 100 that summer with a 17 HMR. Head shots are a must for a quick kill.

I never did get to push my 17 WSM to range. I killed stuff at around 175-200 with it but never anything farther.

Thats a poke!

That I can think of it'd have to be a skunk at 163 yards with a Heritage Rough Rider .22 revolver. Took 12 shots but I finally got it. Shot a jackrabbit at over 100 yards with my buddies Browning Buckmark once. Can't remember the exact distance that time but it was a good shot. Not sure on prairie dogs. I've killed a few well over 150 yards.

Best shot I ever made was on a running 13 lined ground squirrel a long time ago. Squeezed the trigger and heard a loud pop. Exploded its head. It wasn't a far shot but it was a good one. Those little boogers can haul butt. Don't think that was probably necessarily legal to shoot a ground squirrel back then or now looking back on it. Doesn't change the fact that it was a great shot though.

Shot sage rats with a pretty decent kill percentage out to 350yds, I think my furthest was 357, with my 17 WSM and 20gr Vmax. It's fun shooting them out that far with a rimfire but when you hit them, even with the 17 WSM, they just kind of tip over dead with very little splat factor.

I hear of people taking their 17 WSMs out to 500, I always wanted to try my hand at that.

A ping pong ball filled with colored water hanging from a string at 100yds is challenging. A buddies wife filled them then super glued a string to the ball. We hung them so they would dangle from the string. At 100yds with a rimfire and a little breeze makes for a fun time. Cheap ammo is a good idea.

Lol the last sentence got me going. I’d bet that’s a ball of fun. 😉

I think I recall reading where Eric Mayer has popped sage rats out to 450-450+ with the 17 WSM. Eric has spent more time with all of the different 17 WSM's than anyone I know and he isn't a BS'er so if Eric tells you he has shot them out to 450+ with a 17 WSM he's one of those guys you can definitely believe.

The 17 WSM is definitely the King of the rimfires with regard to flat shooting and delivering the pow so they're a lot of fun to stretch their legs and unlike the other rimfires you don't have to aim them like a mortar round and wait for it to fall on the target. :)

I sure did enjoy mine. I loved that thing. It took me awhile to wrap my head around, killing stuff at 200+ with a rimfire, and really with ease. I shot coons, armadillos, groundhogs, that sort of thing.

Won a side stage at a center fire match.
22lr 348 yds. 8" plate.
16 out of 20...probably should have been 18 but the wind did something weird while I was doing a mag change.

Have a video of it some where but you can't really tell the range. It's a white plate in the middle of the prairie with no reference.

Not only a new industry to provide meaningful employment to otherwise unemployed folks, just think of the benefits from recycling all those syringes!

Another interesting target used for years at a local annual turkey shoot was small balloons, inflated to about 6" and tied to a dowel about a foot long. Makes for a challenging offhand target. Finally figured out the trick was to aim at the top of the stick rather than center of mass, because that's the only stationary target, even in a gentle breeze.

Never really tried for anything spectacular but I carried my 10/22 once while I took a couple people out behind my beagles for cottontails. I just enjoyed hearing them run and the guys carried shotguns. I had my 22 in case I found a squirrel or two along the way. Well my hounds were running and one of the guys emptied his semiauto shotgun at a cottontail without touching it. The bunny was barreling across an open field trying to get to a different woodlot at 75 yards or so. Knowing my beagles were well behind this bunny I led it and let one rip with the old 10/22 and much to my surprise that thing started tumbling and never twitched! Perfect head shot on the run at 75 or so yards with my 10/22 loaded up with CCI Mini Mags. Just a little ribbing ensued after that about shooting abilities!

Collegiate National Championships 2000, 3rd Place Free Pistol Team, the University of Utah. It's a 22lr olympic pistol event shot at 50 meters, one handed, iron sights, 60 rounds in 120 minutes. The 10 ring is less than 2 inches. I shot a Toz-35 and Eley Tenex ammo, standard equipment at the time. Here's a lefty Toz-35, breach loader, set trigger, custom grip:

My favorite event was Standard Pistol, I was ranked #1 in the nation headed into nationals my second year. It's also 22lr, but shot at 25 meters, one handed, iron sights, a 60 round combo of rapid fire, timed fire, and slow fire. I used a Pardini SP semi auto. Same target as the 50 meter event. Me shooting lefty at nationals:

Pardini SP, now that's a sweet 22 pistol.
