Baiting

Well, last night just before midnight I finally caught up with him. I have been after this coyote for seems like an eternity. He would make one appearance at the bait site and then be gone for who knows when, 9 days plus many times making it difficult to hunt when he showed up again. He showed up on the 14th and got some food, so he returned three days later - and I was waiting this time.

Bullet impact is where the dark circle is behind his shoulder. 6.5 Grendel, 90 gr. Varmageddon at 80 yards, pass through with only about a quarter size exit, pencil size entry. He dropped and then ran about 25 yards before collapsing. The scope is the new OneLeaf Mars MT1000 with a 50mm lens that gives a base magnification of 2.8x. I zoomed up one time for the shot which was 5.6x.

This has been the worst season I have had in many years. I have only taken 3 coyotes since August. Last year I got 16. But, it's still fun trying.

Good photo, Spot. Coyotes beat all. They are resilient for sure. I shot one that was missing an entire rear leg, and got one trail camera video of another missing a front leg, and I mean the whole leg. He had to lift himself up some as he hobbled, yet he looked healthy. Haven’t seen him since. Have shot several missing part of or a whole paw. They are adaptable.
 
After the Men won the the game, my wife and I went to the game camera field. No coyote out but the landowner called and said I had a coyote in a snare. The snare was about 200 yards from the camera. Large male with complete tail. Stiff but not frozen. Tomorrow night wind will be gtg at the camera I hope stub returns.
 
Was calling with my brother years ago. He shot one that was missing lower half of one hind leg. It could run quite well and was healthy. The leg wound was completely healed.
