Thermal/NV optic choice ?

What type of Thermal or Night vision optic do you use ?

With all the types and prices of thermal and night vision optics available to hunters these days I was wondering what Predator hunters are using as their primary and backup optics.
Not looking for brands, just the type of optic.

Well I progressed from hunting only at night with snow and a bright moon, to hunting at night with red lights, then digital night vision and now thermal. For coyotes, I cannot see going back towards where I started for any reason other than wanting to frustrate myself! :ROFLMAO: But honestly, If I had the desire to get after fox again, I would go back to using red lights without much hesitation. It's slightly more challenging than thermal, but still loved watching those glowing bouncing eyes headed towards the call!
 
IMO if you want a one and done then go with a dedicated thermal. You don't have to spend $5,000-$6,000 on an expensive 640 or 1280 to go out and have fun and kill critters. You can get a good quality 384 for less than half of that and go out and have a good time.

With that said, if I know I'm going to be hunting open areas/fields I still like to take my NV out.
 
I hunted pigs at night for 25 years with a green light and killed a bunch, and I used night vision for a short time. Iā€™m now using a Pulsar thermal and like it a lot.
 
I assume Pole is asking what 'shoot with' use on the rifle ?

Rifle shoot only with gen3 NV . two NV units . clip-on, and with dedicated NV scope .
Scan and range with 640 therm . Foot travel using pvs14.

i wish i had back all the money i have spent on coyote hunting over the years .. i could have bought that foreign asian restaurant , had all the coyotes , cats , possums , and raccoons i could eat , had an income from the restaurant šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ™„šŸ™„šŸ™„....
 
I love my thermal scanner coupled with my thermal scope, it's worth the money IMO. IF there's something to see, I should see it
 
Something to consider. Resolution. I was out with 640 Rattler Thur. nite, saw a flash of a light colored yote(?). Then this morning I saw a light colored DOG going down the creek. On the way home I saw 2 other DOGs coming out of the property! Somebody dumped or they got loose (probably NOT, most of the farm dogs are inside at nite). I would be in trouble if I shot a DOG. Point being, positively ID what you intend to shoot.

You'd be the only one thats admitted it.
I keep a clip on next to a boat picture to remind me never again.
I hunt with and know a good amount of night stalkers, not a one uses a clip on of either flavor in the field.

Poor focus on pic .. but This what the nonconformist looks like just minute after Popping Coyote
( me ) I always been really happy with looking at a 'analog ' detailed projected Picture image of target, rather than a 'digital ' thermal image . I love scanning with Therm. but is is lacking on fine detail that you get with good NV . On Coyotes it really satisfying looking and seeing what it actually looks like. Young, Old, facial detail, and markings. to me it more reality, even though Therm. has got he jump over NV in fog or brush .
