What to take bear hunting?

Hello everyone, I am going on my first ever bear hunt in Ontario, Canada this August. I will be hunting with several guys and my father-in-law (all who have gone numerous times before). I have gotten a lot of great information from all of them. But I am a firm believer that you can never have too much information. I was just wondering what all of you have forgotten when you went hunting and wished you would have had. I,, personally, think of something new every deer season. Anyway thanks for your input and I will post pics as soon as I can.

Yep, if you're hunting over bait, a good butt pad and book are nice things to have. Take a ThermaCell too, they're awesome for keeping the bugs away, and beat the heck out of wearing bug gear.

elimi_nate, It's good to see you posting. For bear hunting I would pack plenty of toilet paper and extra under-britches. If things get western, you might elimi_nate and you'll need these things! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bug spray with 100% Deet and good bug proof head-net and gloves, good water proof seat, good camera and reading material. 308 or 30-06 with 180 gr Partition or Bow and Arrows tipped with wide cutting Broad-heads. You will pretty much have it covered. Good hunting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

A good mesh headnet will help if the bugs are out, it will make sitting still much easier. Good luck with your hunt hope too see some good pics.

Thanks for all of your advice. I will be hunting from a blind with a very soft seat, I broke my pelvis not long ago and would have a hard time sitting in a tree stand. I also plan on bringing a Thermocell for the bugs. A book is something I haven't thought of though. Thanks again and I will read and keep all of this advice and try to pass it on to the guys that are going along.

Great advice youve gotten so far. Especialy the ThermaCell, those bugs are relentless. I would also reccomend bringing a good compact binocular. I cant read onstand but its not a bad idea. A good camera isnt a bad idea either. Not just for the trophy but for the non target species that are also attracted to the bait.

I would pick up a bug tamer suit besides the thermosel. Trust me, the mosquitoes are nasty this time of year! I have a suit I bought in the early 90's when they first came out for my first bear hunting trip. The only place I was bitten, and bitten bad was where the nylon clenched around my wrists. I bet I had hundreds of bites on them. Find something to wrap around your wrists that is thick(deep) enough for the mosquitoes stinger not to penatrate.
