Hey everyone, I have an AR-15, I want to get rid of the A2 upper receiver and replace with a flat top, I want to keep the same barrel, is this something I can do on my own? I'm worried about getting the right spacing and what not, maybe someone in my area can help? I'm in Ogden Utah

well, I've never disassembled an AR barrel before, but I'm not a stranger to guns, necessary tools? LOVE the signature by the way!

Not so much swapping but more like building. As long as you have the right tools is is not hard to do. You will need an AR Barrel wrench, a holding fixture for the upper, and an accurate torque wrench, along with go, no go gauges. Remove the upper from the lower, remove bolt and carrier group, secure upper in a holding fixture in a solid bench vise. Remove handguard, gas block and tube as well as any comp or flash hider that may be affixed to the barrel. Useing AR barrel wrench loosen the barrel nut, remove it pull barrel out towards you. Mount to new upper in reverse, torque to 65 ft lbs in three stages 20, loosen 45 loosen then 65, loosen and retorque to 65. Turn barrel nut as needed to open gas tube hole. replace gas tube and gas block and any flash hider or brake that you want and handgaurd. reinstall bolt carrier checking headspace with gauges ( some folks don't think checking headspace is needed, but I am sort of old school about this) reinstall upper to lower, test fire ect.
This is all covered with pictures on arf com in the build it yourself section. Probiblly better than I explained it.

While it's not a major undertaking, If you are going to have to buy all the tools to make the change, you might be better off financially to have a gunsmith make the swap for you...

Now, that being said, if you are even contemplating building any future ARs, or working continuously on the one you have, the tools are a sound investment....and the experience will be satisfying...

You may come out better to swap uppers.

Buy the one you want, then sell the one you have to offset the cost, unless the barrel has sentimental value to you.

spend the $40 get the action vice and the barrel wrench, then go to AR15.com and find the secion on putting an upper together.

If you can change the oil in your car you can do what you propose.
It's not difficult.

That's what I did and I never regretted it. However, if you do buy the tools and do it yourself, you'll know a lot about ARs when you're finished. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

The resale value of your assembled upper should be pretty high, especially right now.
