Valentine NE. Coyote Hunt

Anyone ever hunt the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge in Nebraska for Coyotes??? I am planning a trip there, and was looking for any input.

I was just in Valentine yesterday. Not to call, but I did stop by Lock, Stock, and Barrel. I would guess that the refuge would be a good place to call, because no one does. But it might be wet, so bring some waterproof foot wear and a change of socks. Alot of it is wet meadows and marsh land with hills in between.

There are plenty of coyotes there, but they do get hit hard by the deer hunter. If you go, make sure it's after Jan 1 as most deer hunting is done by then. If you go before, you will see lots of hunters. Never hurts to knock on a few doors, as you just might get someone to let you hunt.

Not sure how far off your trip is, but Oct. or early Nov. would be great, as only archery deer season is open at that time.

We were talking to Randy Anderson at the Predator Expo, and he was saying that Nebraska has the worst case of Mange that he has ever seen. Almost wiped the Coyotes out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

bakasb,
Wow! If you are talking about the refuge that is north-east of Valentine, you are talking about a wild and wooly place. I drove back in there one day, back in the 70,s. I had my family with me at the time. While driving down the sandy two track, we came upon a herd of bufalo bedded down. They had the road blocked, and when the old bull stood up to look at us, he was a lot taller than my 71 Dodge. I didn't want to tick him off, so I turned around and got the heck out of there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif The refuge is probably off limits for hunting, but it wouldn't hurt to check.

Not all of the refuge is off limits, but you do need to check to see what parts are. Far as coyote numbers go, I've never seen so many. Have been deer hunting the last week and I've seen 19 coyotes so far and not one looked to have mange. Some parts of the state have been hit hard by mange, but that doesn't seem to be the case where I'm hunting. I'd call the local warden for the refuge and see what he has to say.

I know a special permit is required to hunt coyotes on the refuge, but its free, just have to stop by the headquarters and get one.
