Whats the best bait to use in a cage trap when I wanna try and only target possums?
possum only bait?

That's kinda what I thought. I was using cat food for coons while they were open and got a possum.

Ill tell you what I used this season that worked good.
opossum bait recipe
Take a apple put it in your blender and then add a cup of dry dog food. Blend it up into a paste. Then add more dog food until its not too wet, and you can form in into balls and they hold there shape.
They refrigerate it until your ready to use it. I normally use a few of tablespoons of it.

catch a few bluegills or other fish and throw them in a plastic ice cream container and leave them in the sun for about a week or two with a few small holes in the top(not big enough for flies)
when you cant walk within 10 feet of the can its ready.

No such thing as "possum only" bait. The reason you are catching more oppossums than coons in the cage trap is because coons are smarter and more trap wise.
I had coons eating cat food on my front porch, and they would stay at the back of the trap on the outside and work and work until they had the bait even if they had to turn the trap over and wouldn't go in.
I was watching through the window. The next night, I caught a oppossum in the same trap.
About a week later, there were 2 coons back eating the catfood. This time I just ran out the front door with the .22 and got one. The other escaped in the dark.
About a week after that, another oppossum. The softball bat took care of that one.

oh i dont know? i like catching possum (usualyy run a mixed line) and they help pay the gas. usually pre bait round water and brush and you have possum. best bait i'v used was anything stinky, mostly fish but thats what i have the most of. if your trapping possum because the other fur seasons are closed i suggest you wait to trap the possum too. probably their fur would be past prime and why kil a animal just to say you killed it.
