buffalo hunt

I am thinking of doing a buffalo hunt, I have decided to go for a heifer for better meat and I hear their robes are softer. I want this to be a true hunt and not interested in shooting a buff in a pen. any one know of a good outfitter for a fair chase hunt. also I would be using a great looking 330 dakota shooting 338 caliber 225 grain nosler, this is an accurate load and I am wondering if the 225 grain nosler is up to the task of putting a buffalo down.

Cracker,

I have been researching bison hunting for several years. There are a few outfitters that offer true fair chase hunts.

True fair chase hunts are in Utah and Alaska and cost from $5,000-15,000 with no guarantees. There are some great places to hunt buffalo that are ranging on huge pastures in several places. Those will all be contained in some manner.
Custer State Park in South Dakota claim to have free ranging bison (the B&C club even accepts this) but even those bison are 100% contained by a high fence. The B&C club overlooks it for the buffalo coming from in the park but they don't overlook it for the elk/whitetail/mule deer/antelope...a little hypoctricle but reality.

The biggest complaint I have heard from outfitters is that the client calls up requesting "I want it to be challenging, just not challenging enough that there is any chance that I won't get one" That is hard for the outfitter to thread the needle.

Unless you want to fork out thousands of dollars and run the risk of not getting one, you need to focus on some of the reputable bison ranches. Many of the good bison ranches where they are roaming on thousands of acres occur in North and South Dakota on the Bison River. You might try googling "Bison River". I have talked to several and there is one guy that kind of stands out.

There are also several guys in Alaska that offer the real fair chase hunts around Farewell.

Your choice of bullet should be more than adequate. Just a side note: The Hudson , Wy volunteer fire department used to sell raffle tickets for $5:00 ea. for chance on Buff hunt on private ranch on Sweetwater River. Don't know if Dept is still raising funds this way, the old timers I used to know have probably drunk themselves to death by now.

Alaska has a few truely free ranging bison herds. These hunts require you to draw a tag which in some cases is probably more difficult than doing the actual hunt itself. The application period is in December each year. Already mentioned is the Farewell herd (fly in, wilderness), the Delta herd (farm lands/woods style hunting), and the Copper River & Chitna herds (boat in, fly in, etc. wilderness). For an outsider the Delta herd could be a DIY hunt. The others need access support.

Cracker, if you are interested in a true wild buffalo hunt, come on out to Utah and put in for the Henry Mountain Range buffalo. It is a real hunt.... the last guy we took hunting was from Michigan and thought he was just gonna come out here and hit one over the head with a hammer. He has a new aspect for hunting buffalo. He killed his bull @ 10,000 feet with nice shot @ 374 yards. His bull scored 17th in the world.

Let me know if you are interested and i will give you some names of the outfitters.

Here is a couple pics from last years buffalo hunts on the Henries...
