Owl ATTACK!!!

So a few nights ago I went out coyote hunting. I was using a siren to locate them and then going back to set up on them. Wel,l I located a lone coyote no more then 150 yards from the road. I drove around the block and set up very close to where he was. I started the FOXPRO off with a baby cottontail and with in seconds a owl swoops in on the call. No biggie, this happens from time to time. All of a sudden the owl turns and dives on me! Not once, but four times! At one point I had to swing my shot gun at it to hit it as it was about to dive on my head! I eventually had to stand up and chase it away. By the way the caller is 40 yards from me.

Here is where it gets Alfred Hitchcock
Last night I go out to the same area and hit the siren. I am standing in the middle of the road next to my car playing a siren. With in seconds a owl swoops out of a tree and dives my car and the starts flying around me dipping. I have had it with this owl so I jump in my car and take off. I'm thinking now that this owl is just crazy.

So I hunt a few other fields across town and on my last field I head back to my car. I set the FOXPRO on top and play a siren to see if may be I called in something but just did not see it. THE SECOND I HIT THE CALL FOUR OWLS start dive bombing my car! I grab the call and jump in the car and take off....Thye give chase and fly in front of my car and all around for a quarter mile!

So now I am officially freaked out!

Has anyone else had this problem? Do Owls hate sirens? I have been using this method for years and never seen an owl while using the siren. I understand if I was in a field using a hand call and sounding like a snack but using a ecaller on my car?

I hope someone can speak into this...

That is very strange ....for me...owls are an omen and seeing many at strange times means a big change coming to my life... kind of an Native American belief that has been true for me and no I have no Native blood in my veins as far as I know. I have no explanation for what has happened to you. Just be prepared . Just my two cents. Jim

Next time while driving to your stand crack the windows a bit...it gives the smoke somewhere to go.

You didn't mention the breed of owl.....swooping down over folks is a very common trait for the boreal owl. I've experienced this many times here but not sure if you have Boreals.

I knew I would get some grief over this but it is true. Read my other post I have never posted anything out of the ordinary before.

What other bird of that size could it be? It is big and silent. I figured owl, but could be another bird. Any suggestions?

LOL
No one doughts you it is just the amount of times it happened to you.
I have had owls do this on many hunts but just not so many in a row.
This time of year in my neck of the woods is when it happens the most.
Clean the mice out of your hat it will happen less-LOL

I don't know the breed, as it is very dark out. The bird is very large.

I have been doing some research on this and I have read that around this time the young owls that hatched this year are starting to learn how to hunt and will act very different then an adult owl. They said that this behavior should calm down towards the end of the month.

If I think about hunting at night in the past this is the earliest I have been out.

Must have been your after shave, or something similar.... I had a couple of Barred Owls that set up house keeping in a big Oak tree in my yard where we used to live and when the chicks were in the nest, they used to stay close and watch me while I cut the lawn...

As long as I didn't stop near the tree they were fine,,, but if I, or one of my neighbors, came close to the tree for very long, they acted pretty nervous and started flying around, but never diving...

The only Owl bigger than the Barred, is the Great Horned...and they can be monsterous compared to the rest of them...This is a little late in the year for the chicks to still be around the nest...They usually hatch in March and are gone by July....Maybe they thought you were a Coyote after their next meal...

Must be a Michigan thing.

Not anywhere close to where I live. That's for sure.
Maybe a lower Michigan thing?

How about a flock of large Bats. The siren could have really been messing with there echo locating. Could have ticked them off a bit.

I'm just kidding around GW. I honestly have no Idea what it could have been. I do believe you. Try contacting a wildlife biologist.

I've read that owls have very good hearing, they can hear a mouse russeling in the leaves at 100 yards, so maybe the siren was hurting their ears.Their only defense is to dive at the source of the sound to make it quit.

Do you think that it has anything to do with my pet pocket mouse? It is either that or the new product from "Come er Deer" called "Come er Owl" my wife bought it and said it was a new cologne?

GW

We've had them come in and try to get the Foxpro before, but they aren't too crazy about coming after it when we're standing up. Maybe they liked your cologne?

I`m not sure what type but I saw an owl a taxidermist had done years ago, and I know I wouldn`t want one digging them talons into me! they were pretty huge. good laughs at the crack the window an let the smoke out.

thats pert crazy lol, i had an owl dive bomb my old foxpro spitfire last year, after a couple swoops he realized it wasnt food and bolted!

funny part is i had a edge rabbit decoy 10 yards from the foxpro but she showed no interest in the decoy only the caller!
