I just ordered a ghillie suit and was wondering what(if anything)I need to do to it before hunting with it?I currently don't use a cover scent but thought the smell of burlap seems foriegn in the woods.Any help would be greatly appreciated. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

My ghilllie suit hangs outside every day of the year under the overhang on the back porch. It's been out there for a long time too. It still smells like burlap, not as strong as it once did, but if I can smell it, they can too. That being said, I think it actually helps in covering my scent. Anyway, that may be a dumb statement, but the ghillie is still the best camo I have ever worn on the ground. I don't clean it at all, just let it hang out in the rain every now and then.

If you do not want to hang your new Ghillie suit outdoors, another option is to:
1. Always treat it with a fire retardent chemical, usually in a spray format. Failure to do this may cause the out-gassing combustible vapors to ignite when you get near a flame source. Breathing flame is not good for your hunting future.
2. Next, treat the burlap and cloth with a water repellant spray. These cammo suits get very, very heavy when wet. They also look more "natural" when water beads on them.
3. You can spray the inside and outside with one of the scent-removing sprays and repeat this step two or three times until the overpowering burlap fragrance is minimized.
Be sure to let the Ghillie Suit dry completely between operations.
Be sure to air it out after wearing it.
I keep mine in a plastic trash bag that has the "earth scent" stuff in it. The Ghillie Suit smells like fresh, loamy earth.

My Ghillie suit came with instructions to bury the bugger in the dirt for a few days before using it. I think that a more better approach would be to throw the suit inside a closed box with a bunch of cedar branches for a week.
