22-250 ream to 22-250 imp, or not?

My tikka shoots terrific, so accuracy gains or losses aren't my concern right now...my question is, im getting 3750 fps with 40 grn vmaxes. I figure with a 22 inch barrel I really should be a bit faster. For me this combo is great for coyotes but shouldn't I have a large gain over 223 remington velocities with the same bullet? Im using max Hornady load with varget.

There really wouldnt be any negatives to punching it out to an Ackley...

1)It almost eliminates case trimming
2) It has a bit of a ring to it, just sounds cool
3) You pick up speed.

On the flip side, I dont see where the coyotes would notice any difference.

I wouldn't do it myself on a slow twist barrel, I would go up with say an 8 twist barrel or possibly a 7 twist. I am running 62 gr tsx at 3500 with with my 22-250ai and am still close to just max load for non improved. I think you should be able to get some more out of it the way it is. But there is something about the 40 degree shoulder and a big chunk of lead that just looks cool.

I've always felt the same as yotesmokerz. If I'm going to ackley I want a faster twist barrel than the 14 currently on most factory guns. That being said, if you are happy with the 40 grainers then go for it. The very least you'll accomplish is increased case life.

How many grains of Varget are you using with the 40 gr V-Max?

My Nosler 5th Edition Reloading Guide shows the 22-250 Varget Max load is 38.0 gr at 4100 fps.

A 22-250 shoots 40gr to 55 gr pretty dang fast I wouldn't make a 22-250 into a Ackley Improved to shoot 40 gr to 55gr bullets in a 1-12" or 1-14" twist barrel.

If I wanted to shoot 55 gr and bigger bullets I may consider the 22-250 AI with a 1-8" or 1-9" twist barrel.

Well, id need to see what my load is, and I think im getting the loss from the 22" barrel. I been thinking about taking my tikka t3 .223 1-8"twist barrel off and reaming to 22-250. Then turn the .223 into a 17 rem. As for speed, for so much more powder of think I should have more than 150 fps gain over .223rem.....

I had my Tikka T-3 223 Rem 1-8" twist reamed to 223 AI. It has been fun fire forming the brass while shooting at ground squirrels.

I had a 22-250 made up with a Rem 700 action with a 26" 1-8" twist Hart barrel on it for shooting the heavier lead free bullets at coyotes.

my 50 gr vmaxes are coming out of my 22" barrel at 3775 with 36 grains of Varget so you should be quicker than that. Maybe your chrono is off. Just a thought

Hi, I was wondering if someone could explain to me what a 22-250 improved is ? I've never heard of doing this, I know its kinda off hand of what y'all are talking about, but I figured if I don't ask I can't learn.

Do a search on the internet for 22-250 Ackley Improved, 223 Ackley Improved or 243 Ackley Improved and you will find some pictures of what the Ackley Improved looks like.

The chamber is reamed out so that the shoulder on the brass has a sharper angle to it and the brass is a bigger diameter out by the shoulder. So the the Ackley Improved holds more powder than the original round does.

When you do the search there will be plenty of information to explain it to you.
