Killing raccoons?..

I finally got my trapper id # and I set my first trap line today! It is all of four traps long. LOL

I set four DP duke raccoon traps and I want to know if I can humanly kill any raccoon I catch with a catch pole. I know you can do it to cats, but all the research I did showed guys shooting them or drowning them. I don't want to do either of these due to where I set my traps.

Are raccoons chokable?

Thanks

I'm no trapper and I'll never claim that I am so take this for what it's worth. A really good friend of mine that has been trapping for a lot of years said choking them is not an easy thing to do. I've worked his trapping line with him a few times and a 22lr does a good job and doesn't make a lot of noise.

22 short in a single action pistol is every bit as effective, doesn't make a whole lot of noise, and is much easier to carry on the trap line.

A good BobCat Trapper I know over in Cody swears by the .22 short for BobCats.

Anyone had experience using the .22 SubSonic CB longs on Bobcats or Coons in the traps?

They sure are quiet.

Like a lot of other good things, that ain't happening today.

I use .22 CB shorts when I don't have a club. No louder than a stick breaking, and will affectively dispatch anything from a coon to a coyote.

With a coon in a foothold that is a good way to have some lifelong memories engraved on your leg. Works well with fox AFTER you knock them unconscious
A 22 short will solve your problems. Be aware that coons bleed heavily when shot so many will have a stick to hold them down with so the fur is not saturated with blood.

Thump and step. Thump on the head with my walking stick. Lay the stick at the base of the head and step on it to hold the head down. Step on the side behind the back of the front leg until it expires. No blood, very humane and quick.

Browning Buckmark, plain jane .22's, like the Rem. bulk stuff. Too many breathers with the club method, not to mention what a pain they are to skin. (bone chips are hard on gloves)

C'mon 1happyshooter, being an Arkensaw fellow I would have figured you would have caught some coons by hand.
A dry piece of hickory 2 feet long and 2 inches aruond to the back of the head should work.

Thanks for the info. It's been so cold, coons seem to have been all holed up. Is this what raccoons do when it's really cold?

Not a single coon so far.

CB shorts work great for everything. Have heard of badgers waking up in the back of trucks madder than he11 after being shot in the head with the cb but have never personally seen it.
