270 Bear Load

I have been toying with the idea of trying to book a guided black bear hunt for my birthday. To my understanding, a 270 win is plenty for black bears. However, the only pet loads that i currently use are 130 grainers, both Sierra Gamekings and Hornady Inteerlock SP's with H4350 and H4381. But, I am unsure whether I really must go up to a heavier bullet for a bear or if my hot H4350 130gr load is sufficient.

Don't sweat it. Your 130gr in the .270 Win. will be fine.

If you find a big one, your only looking at 400 pounds, "ish".

.270 is a "killa".

Only thing I would do different is use the Nosler Partition, but the bullets you listed will kill them just fine. You wont be under gunned for black bear, I will promise you that.

I'd go that way, too. I have mucho faith in that bullet's design.

Smokless & Evil are correct, absolutely no reason to use anything heavier than a 130.
MOST of the elk taken with a 130gr SP are WELL larger/heavier than any black bear you are gonna find.

The List of things that a 130gr Partition won't kill quickly goes like this:
Naval Carrier, House, Abrams tank....

Alright, glad to know that my current loads are sufficient. However, I was also thinking about getting a couple of the 140 gr Sierra Gameking HP's instead of SP's anyway. Those have a nice wide nose cavity, their ballistics aren't as sluggish as 150 grainers, and my gun will probably shoot them more like 130 grainers which it likes; in addition I could also probably find more uses for a heavier bullet than one hunt, for instance: hog hunting in the lush grounds with only short range shot opportunities which we have plenty of in all of our public lands down here in Florida.

I killed a black w/ my 270. I was on a moose hunt and loaded up 160 gr Barnes.. I wouldn't be afraid of using a 130 Nosler partition that I usually shoot for black bear.

Are we talking bait, hounds, or a spot & stalk hunt out West? Most bear hunting is a close range event, bait or hounds anyway. I took a bear last Fall over bait, close with plenty of time. I used my 284win & took a neck shot, right down he went. I just used surplus ammo I had on hand, factory 150 grn soft points. I have used partitions before out of a 30 cal, worked fine too of course.

No need to change bullets from what you already shoot - the 130 Interlock is a very good bullet to kill a black bear. It's designed for good penetration and controlled expansion.
