300 Win Mag muzzle brake (pics added) (first group and recoil report)

I'm planning a new build. I have had an old Savage 7mm Rem Mag that I have wanted to do something with for a long time. It's given decent accuracy, I can get 3 at about an inch or little over at 100 yards. I had a 300 Win Mag in the same rifle and sold it due to my lack of motivation to shoot a 180 grain bullet at 3000 fps out of a 7# gun. I used the funds to buy the 7mm Rem Mag in the same platform. It was quite a bit better to shoot as far as not so punishing. About 6-8 months ago I got a 6.8 SPC upper from Scott @ SD that had a really nice Titan SJC 5/8-24 .308 break on it, I took it off and put a linear comp on it to quiet it down some, as I wanted to use it for pushing deer. It really helped ALOT! So I have been sitting around looking at this break dreaming of things to use it on. I thought about putting it on my 20" Grendel for a short time but decided recoil was no issue at all there and should utilize it some where better. So this morning I ordered a Magnum contour 300 win mag switch barrel for the Savage. I really liked the 7mm and was gonna get another. But when I called to make my order, they had a stainless 300WM in stock and ready to ship, but it would be an 8-12 week wait on the 7mm barrel.

I realize there are better brakes for magnum rifles, and better "vias" type brakes for hunting purposes. But this is a $120 Titan and I really like the looks of it. So I called my buddy at GAP and he is gonna bead blast, thread, install and index my new barrel and brake for me for a price I couldn't turn down. My question is, How much reduction in recoil will a brake give me on this 300 mag? The barrel is gonna be heavier as it is .700 at the muzzle instead of the .550 it's replacing. I realize companies say 30-50% but what other chamber would it compare to, .308, 25-06, .270, etc? I'm not worried about noise, if you are don't post! I always wear high quality industrial grade ear plugs and sometimes even muffs on top. This rifle will most likely see 10-15 times as much target shooting as it will any hunting. Just kinda tinkering. Making my first attempt at an actual long range capable rifle. What do you think as far as reduction in recoil?

You will love the break, your friends won't! It will diffinitly make the 300WM alot more pleasant to shoot. Several friends shoot the WM and the WSM and all either use breaks or cans and the recoil is very tolerable. Maybe 308 to 30-06 recoil level.

I'm kicking myself now cause I traded about 300 rounds of once fired 300 Win Mag brass and my dies to a buddy, for some AR parts I wanted at the time. Well I mostly wish I had the brass back...

Are you gonna put it in a target type stock and LR type scope, if so that will tame it even more because of the extra weight. Either way I think it will make it much nicer to shoot repeatedly at the range.

Like Pyscodog said, youll love it but your frinds wont

Its not gonna get real fancy right off the bat. It already has a nice Rifle Basix trigger, and a EGW rail with mid range Nikon glass. If it shoots as well as I'm hoping it will, I will spring for better glass. Stock will most likely be a Bell & Carlson later. I don't want it to weigh a ton, It might be a packing rifle for high altitude hunt "someday". I'm gonna inlet the factory Savage stock for now. Trying not to spend a ton of money on this right now, just a little at a time. If you guys knew how much my buddy said he'd work on it for, you would probably light torches and gather pitch forks...LOL!

Guess so lol! I probably shot down this threads potential posters when I said, if your worried about noise don't post.

I shoot a 338 AX (lapua Mag Imp) in a pistol. No way in the world would I shoot it with out the brake. Every pistol I own has a brake.

If you shoot at a public range you have to watch. Other than that the reduced recoil no way Im going back.

That's AWESOME! I think one of those is gonna have to be on my bucket list. What does it weigh? And whats the muzzle velocity?

With scope it weighs 11.5 lb.

It will push a 300 gr pill at 2700fps.

Recoil on it is about like a 44 Mag.

look at the video.

VERY COOL! little heavier then I thought it would be but I bet it packs really nice for a day of hunting and hiking.

Kind of a dumb question, But with the brake redirecting so much of the gas, won't it make it quieter down range? Like would there be a better chance of not giving away your location if you were taking a long range poke at a critter?

That's what I'm hoping for. I have a Sendero in a 25-06. Really wanted one in a Win Mag. I had just heard so much good about 1st gen Sendero's in 25-06, I picked it up. And I'm glad I did! I tried to make a deal with a guy in the classifieds that had a 700p 300 win mag. Couldn't make it work so I decided to build up my old Savage. I wanted it to have a fair amount of weight but not quite like the Sendero. I'm hoping it will weight in at 10-12#'s and the recoil will be .308 to 30-06 like or less. I'm pretty stoked, barrel be here next week and I'm shipping it all to my buddy ASAP. Hope to get a load worked up and have it ready by spring.

My Stevens/Savage action come home yesterday. I sent it to my buddy to re-barrel, thread and install my brake. I haven't shot it yet, but I wanted to share some pictures of the rifle after he finished it. I know I could have re-barreled it myself at home. But he really does really nice work, and he did it all for crisp C-note. It left as a stock average shooting Stevens 7mm Rem Mag with a Rifle Basix trigger. But it came back BEAUTIFUL!

Specs: Stevens/Savage LA, Rifle Basix SAV1, ER Shaw 1-10" Magnum contour 24" 300 WM barrel (.720" at brake, .830" at stock forend), 5/8-24 Titan SJC .308 muzzle brake, Bell&Carlson Duramaxx varmint channel stock (well free floated), EGW LA base, with Leupold low rings and a 4-12x mil-dot Nikon Prostaff (gonna upgrade scope later).

While this is not a GAP rifle, my buddy does work there and did the work in the shop on his own time. He bead blasted and finish the stainless barrel, threaded and indexed the brake. Then he installed and set head space and lazer engraved the cartridge on the barrel. I know its just a Savage to most of you guys but this is the first re-barreled bolt gun I've ever owned and I'm kinda proud of how it turned out.

This was a very low budget project. I already had everything but the barrel and the stock.

I would take any and all load/powder recommendations from win mag fans. I haven't had a 300 WM in about 5 years and never got the last one to shoot real well. Any thoughts? Thanks for looking and advice you might share!
