cheap 22-250?

I have been told by Cabelas and two local shops that the Stevens 200 is no longer in production, anybody know any different????

I went cheap when I had young kids at home, and I got what I paid for. Save some more money if you can, unless you don't care if you have 5" groups at 100 yards. Good Luck on your next gun.

You appear to be a little out of touch with the accuracy that can be had in rifles at the lower end of the price range in the modern era. Was this compromise purchase even in this century?

Here's a group from my first trip out with a Savage Axis .223 and factory ammo. 1.07 inches (outside to outside -.223). With my handloads dialed in, it's sub 1 inch all day long and that's 5 shot groups.

If you're getting 5 inch groups with ANY new rifle these days, it isn't the rifle, it's you.

You still get what you pay for in terms of certain cosmetics and ancillary features, and of course paying more gets you more in terms of better triggers, better stocks, etc. But you don't need to spend $600++++ to get yote-whacking accuracy as long as the shooter can do the job.

Grouse

I found two rifles locally, both m700's, both target models, both with scopes for $650 and $600 respectively. You don't always need to go new.

+1 savage axis is one of the best cheap shooting guns on the market imo other wise you can get a nice gun for around 800 its all about what u want to spend

I have the axis in 22-250 camo stock and the factory trigger was horrible. I dropped a rifle basix trigger in and got it set at about a crisp 1.8 lbs. Love the trigger for $85. I topped it off with a Leupold VX-2 6x18-40 cds. Shooting Hornady varmint 55 grain v-max very accurately, less than .5 MOA. Currently waiting on my custom CDS dial to arrive at my door to see how accurate the custom cut turret will be.

I absolutely love this rifle for a varmint rig, granted it is not the most appealing to the eye but I really don't care how it looks as long as it shoots, especially for under $350.

Also have the Axis in .243, same story. Very accurate.

Dick's Sporting Goods sells a varmint Remington 700: 26" barrel, adj. trigger and camo stock. Basically an SPS except ADL (blind box) magazine. Usually on sale with a cheap 4-12x scope you can upgrade later. And don't forget the huge aftermarket for the 700 that lets one customize it as funds permit. Also, the aforementioned Marlin looks like the best bargain out there; I've seen 'em new for 300 bucks around here. From what I've been able to glean from articles and the internet, they seem to be generally reliable and accurate.
I would stay away from the pencil-barreled .22-250s. You need the length to wring the most speed from that cartridge, and the extra mass to shave a little bit of muzzle jump off for varmint shooting. Might quiet the report down a wee bit, also; to my ears the '250 seems loud for its caliber (with ear protection, of course.)

+1 for the Axis. I didn't wanna spend a fortune for a yote gun so I got the axis package with the 3-9 bushnell in 22-250. Wow I'm impressed. Had it sighted in spot on at 150 and honestly I can get a pretty tight group up to about 300 yds. I can't say a single bad thing about the gun. Light as a feather too. I would recommend it to everyone

+1 on this you can buy the Vanguard S2 in a 22-250 for $499 and right out of the box they are guarenteed to shoot less than an inch at 100yards with good factory ammo, then you handload for them and get them under half moa pretty easy. The triggers are adjustable and they are a 2 stage, the stocks are ok good gun for the money, if you go with an axis you will have a short action cartridge in a long action.

+3 on the Vanguard 2, just bought one at Cabelas for 427 with a employee discount promo they had. I really like it so far. Shot Hornady 55 sp out of it at just under moa.
Topped it with a Vortex Diamondback 4 x 12 scope.
