Cedar swamps??

Just wondering how many of you guys travel to the cedar swamps this time of year to call??

I have noticed the majority of the sign ive been seeing has been in the swamps with the deer and rabbits.

Also, it just always seems warmer in the swamps and a lot less wind.

Hopefully tomarrow morn will find me underneath a cedar with a gun in hand!!

Screech-- I'm not sure if cedar swamps are like a michigan thing or what. Surely they must exist all along the great lake regions I would think. Anyhow, I deer hunt in a large cedar swamp every year and I know that the deer hole-up there when arctic temps set in. all the yoopers I know hunt the cedars, or "deer yards " for yotes once the frigid temps set in. It would seem like a good spot to me.

2MUCHGUN, Thanks for replying,, yes i was beginning to think that after posting the question and not getting any response.

people are probably saying "cedar swamps... what in the hell is a cedar swamp".

Anyhow, i went for a walk the other day and was astouded at the amount of coyote/bobcat sign in the section of "cedar swamp" i was in.

The deer and rabbits were everywhere also.

Problem up here is that wolves have also moved in and terrorize the yotes. Gota work around them i guess.

again, thanks for the reply!!

Still wondering about the cedar swamp thing now, haven't heard anyone else use the expression on this site before. Anyhow, the guys I know who hunt em will often use a fawn ditress call and decoy. others say that if you find the deer you don't hardly have to call much because they will come to the deer also. If you can find lots of rabbit sign, that would also seem to be a great spot. adios

I say the cedars are the way to go. I'll be going Monday, if your game to go.

Maybe elsewhere they call cedar swamps something different?

This time of the year the cedar swamps are the way to go. I hunt the Dead Stream swamp outside of Houghton lake, and also in and around St. Helen. I also hit a few of them in Presque Isle Co. I also hunt in Raber and when the weather gets nasty and the snow is flying that's where I head to. I switch to using a shotgun since the shooting is usually going to be close. Besides I think the cedar swamps are just a great place to be anytime. Good Luck To Ya!

I didn't see this thread till today. I would have to agree it seems they are in there. Not sure if they have to be cedar or just low land swampy areas. Lots of rabbit sign and some are connected to rivers too. I haven't had any luck calling out a coyote yet but I did manage to call a wolf back in 12/03.

the cedars i hunt in alpena are so damn thick you hav to get in tree to see any distance at all. think i'm going to jus hunt the field edges along the cedars with my 204 and then my buddy will have benelli nova with #4 buckshot.

while I got all you mich guys on here, do any of you know a good bear outfitter in the U.P.? gonna be hunting the baraga unit this time.

Screech,

Anytime I run accross a swamp connecting to a slow moving frozen river, I usually will make a set. Swamps up here are good places to set up because they hold so much game.

2Muchgun, I know a guy that can set you up, but I cant think of his real name for the life of me. Everyone calls him J.R., and he lives in Covington. Im sure if you called the local store, they all know him. He's a big Finlander logger, and does very good on the bears. If I can think of his name later, I will update you.

Coyote Mike, where abouts in Raber do you go? I was just down there Sunday with Screech trying to call one in. Seems to be some decent sign in the area.

I used to hunt the deadstream when I was a kid, I grew up in Shepherd. Thats a big, thick, nasty swamp aint it?

Bucktales;
A friend of mine has the cabin in Raber. Not sure of the name of the road. But it's down from the bar and pass the boat launch. it was the last cabin on the road. We hunted west of the cabin. There a place he called the fossil beds. It's a large field about 3/4 of a mile through the woods. Lots of coyote and bobcat in the area.

And yes the Dead Stream swamp can be a nasty place. But I've hunted it quite a lot, so it's almost like my back yard. I know the Houghton Lake, and St. Helen area a lot better than Raber. Been going to that part of Michigan most of my life. Hey good luck to ya. Good hunting. Be nice to meet with you someday. Take Care.

Bucktales, how "bout that bear guide? have any of you guys hunted around alpena? I deer/turkey hunt there all the time. matter of fact, saw my last yote bowhunting on nov. 14--a close miss on a hard shot. another busted out of the trees behind me and damn near got the big tom I had coming right to me! Need to exact some serious revenge. seeing less and less small game and more doggies. the turkeys don't hardly even gobble anymore for fear of being eaten. I'm gettin' pissed just thinkin' about it, have a very itchy trigger finger.

2much, I sent an email to the guys cousin. I hope to have a name and phone number for you soon. I want to say his last name is Seppala, but not sure.

I have never hunted the Alpena area. I would bet that Screech and his fellow workers have tho.

Just a lil note to let you MI fellas know that you don't have a monopoly on cedar swamps. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif We have em here,east-coast Canada as well,'cept we call 'em,well...er...cedar swamps. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Hunted one 2 weeks ago and bobcat/rabbit sign was excellent, only got back to hunt it once since then and it was a miserable day, very windy, drizzle etc.Plan to get in there again this week, but cat season ends tommorrow /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif .Oh well, coyote season never closes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif "Honest officer,I coulda swore that was one of them rarely seen short-tail spotted eastern coyotes"

2muchgun, if you go to www.upbearguides.net you can see some of the success that he has had. Sorry it took so long to get you the info. I didnt know he had a website up and running now.

Grinr, glad to see they dont call them something different up there. Good luck on the short-tailed coyotes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
