scope for shotgun/870, looking for good and cheaper models

Fellows...been pondering a scope for my Rem 870 for Turkey/Predator hunting. Looking across the internet I see some scopes that some guys mount on their shotguns. One guy had a scope brand (think it was Aimpoint 9000 model) and when I looked for it across the internet I found it was around $500. This is way too expensive for me and wondering what some of you guys have for your shotgun scope that is a lot cheaper? I am primarily looking at the red dot models. What mount do you use to mount your scopes on the 870? I see some scopes listed as 1X and 2X. Thanks for ideas you can provide.

Im not a red dot fan. Bushnell and Nikon make nice shotgun scopes in the 1.5x4 ramge.Thats what I used on my 870. The saddle mount by B Square was the way I mounted the scope. You can remove the saddle and put the trigger pins back in and have your regular scatter gun without losing zero on the scope. Good luck with your search. Oh yeah the bushnell and nikons are usually just over $100.

I actually researched this same thing a couple years back for my father's 870. We were looking for a good quality red dot that would take the pounding of an 870 shooting 3" SST hornadys during deer season and not brake the bank. I do not recommend going too cheap on your red dot. You want to purchase one that is going to handle the recoil and still track well. After some research I settled on an Ultra-dot match dot. I purchased it thru Midwayusa. It was around 240 and I believe they still are. There is also an Ultra-dot for 189, It just doesn't have as many options with dot size. Dot size is usually 1moa, 2moa, 4moa. It just basically means, from my understanding and experience, how much of the target is covered up when aiming. Obviously smaller the dot more pinpoint the accuracy. I looked all over the web and these red dots get really good reviews on shotguns and handguns. Seems like they are popular with the match pistol crowd as well. We set it up on my fathers 870 and zeroed it at 50yds. It helped his grouping big time. We moved out to 100yds and played around shooting our steel 8" swingers and he could hit it all day long. Something he couldn't do with just his stock iron sights. His eye sight is getting worse so I figured a red dot would help him out and it did. No problem hitting an Illinois white tail. Not sure of course how they work patterning a Turkey or coyote load but they are great with slugs. Scope has stayed on track each season so far. Have not had to adjust it, just take it out of the safe and check zero. I also recommend having your 870 drilled and tapped for actual weaver style base mounts. We had that done for around 70 here and it came with the mounts. They seem more solid than other styles. I've had a lot of experience with aim-point and eotech red dots when I was in the military, I'd say the ultra-dot for the money is good quality. Just my opinion and advice. Hopefully others have some good advice to share on other brands or this.

My 870 came D&T'ed from the factory. It will have an optic of some kind soon. A friend used a scope on his and it works great for buck shot.

I ruined 2 brand new "cheap" shotgun scopes due to recoil before I bought a Leupold for my 870. sometimes "cheap" will cost more.

I use a Nikon Red Dot scope on both my 870 and 11-87 Rem Shotguns with the cantilever slug barrel. The scope stays with the barrel when I change back to the smooth bore for bird hunting, and It ALWAYS stays on Zero.

Leupold shotgun scope. 2-7 x 33. I think a little over $200. Old 870 I had drilled and tapped years ago as my eyes got worse. Rifled sabots out to 100 yds or over for younger eyes. Don't waste your money on a cheap scope. I have and they loose there zero after a couple of shots.

Dr. Lou,

I've considered this Leupold scope too. But I cannot find if the parallex is set for 75 yards or 100 yards? How do you like the scope on your shotgun? Is your shotgun shooting sabots?

Most of my guns wear Leupolds.Their VX 1 line is nice/priced reasonable. Now that they're also making Redfields both the Revenge and Revolution lines are well worth a look.

Nikon with the turkey reticle. I use that at night with a kill light 250 under the barrel. and I have no complaints at all.

I actually have a BSA 2x pistol scope on my 12 ga in a scout setup and it has been very stout. Not my usual experience with cheapo products. I bought one for $26 to try out the Scout concept and have left it on since then.
