3-9x50

I am thinking about putting a 3-9x50 on my new Savage Trophy Hunter 22-250 for coyotes. I am thinking that is plenty for coyotes and woodchucks here in Michigan. This will be for sub 350 yards.

What do you guys think?

3-9 power is a good all around magnification in my opinion. I have 3-9s on most of my rifles (all with 40mm objectives though). I've shot prairie dogs in the 200-300 yard range with my .223 so equipped, so you should be good to on chucks and coyotes.

The 3x9 is a good scope but I prefer the 40mm objective because I had to mount a 50mm so high I had to install a raised cheek piece to be able to shoot it.well.

I just bought a 3x9x50 leupold rifleman to put on my 25-06
for ground hogs out to 400, i think it was a good choice..
i looked through several 40s and for the price i thought
it was a good deal. very bright and clear for the $$..
i will however mount it as close as i can to the bore....
i don't think i'm gonna need a cheek pad????

..... I agree with you.... You keep it as low to the barrel as possible and I believe you will be fine..... I have several scopes with 40mm, 42mm, as well as 50mm objective lens and have never had any problems.....

Heck,,,,, you are only talking about 5mm difference between the center-line height of a 40mm and 50mm scope,,,,, that's 0.19585" or less than a 1/4" (slightly more than 3/16")....

.... Go for it!!!

I've got a 3x9x50 on my Stevens (Savage).
IMO, it's plenty of magnification, since I rarely have taken shots farther than 300 yds.

The only problem I've had is "operator error"....when I've had it on 9x & I get backdoored at 40 yds!! hahaha

The 50a won't increase field of view, only allows more light through. Light "gathering" is a mythical concept - Scopes only transmit the light rays that enter the glass. Past 20 feet nearly all light is entering straight on to your scope, so increasing diameter allows a modest increase in surface area of glass allowing light thru. All that said - there is a practical limit to noticeable difference in brightness. Larger objectives on low power Scopes like a 3-9 seem to do little to improve light transmission on a noticeable level because even on 9x you get plenty of light with anything north of a 32 mm objective. Nightforce makes their 2-10 with a 32mm objective. What does make all the difference is the quality of the glass and what coatings are applied to reduce light distortion and deflection thru the lenses. I probably sound like a super nerd here but these are good concepts to understand when trying to decide how much to spend or what you really need. The comments above about mounting lower are spot on. If you find that on Max magnification you can't see quite well enough, turn it down to lowest setting - most quality Scopes make it possible to shoot well past legal hours if set less than 5x
