Badger sets?

I've done alot of trapping over the years, but have never really tried for badgers in particular. My dad and brother both want one for a full body mount so I figured I'd key in on them this fall/winter.

Any advice on traps, sets, etc would be appreciated, pictures would be good too! lol

My trapping knowledge basically consists of coons, skunks, coyotes, muskrats.

Ranch that I trap coyotes for called last year said he had a badger in his field making a mess. Put in 3 sets just like this one and had him in 2 days. I don't worry about the trap pattern with badgers. Just threw some Powder River bait down the hole. Last season I picked up 3 in some blind set trail sets on my coyote line as well.

Thats a nice looking set! What traps you guys running? It has been years and years since I ran a dirthole set. I mainly snare coyotes, and live trap coons.

AS nvsage said most Badgers are not that hard to catch. They have a real attraction to a dirt hole set. In many cases it is a waiting game. It is not uncommon for them to take long knaps ( 7-30 days ) during fur season
Any foothold capable of holding a coyote will have no problem keeping a Badger at the location.
Use two long stakes and cross stake. Never know what direction they will dig in and they will dig after being caught. Make sure you carry a long handle to clean up after the catch.
Badgers do not prime here in Nebraska until late December and January.

Those are some great pics nvsage! I grew up watching my dad trap in the early-mid 80s, so I've seen alot of badgers caught, I will have to go thru his old trapping shed and see what he still has left for traps.

Anyone know when badgers get prime in SD? If its not till Dec or January like NE I will have to battle sub zero temps.

If you don't get one, I know I have at least one rolled up in the freezer that you're welcome to. EJ is right the best badgers are killed in Feb. What I have is earlier than that. They prime up late. If you can figure a way to ship it, you can have it. It isnt fleshed yet, but if you're mounting it, that's the taxidermists chore.

I nailed a few after I found tracks, and I noticed they love to look in culverts. I used some 1.75s, 12 foot of 18 inch corrigated culvert, and some of Cavens Just Mice. Traps never set more than 72 hours, and produced reds often. Used a yardstick to place bait in pipe and set both ends. Actually caught a digger on one end and a red on the other one night.
