A "coyote pen" is literly a pen encolsure with coyotes in it. Pens can range from 20-400 acres around here where I live, but if you go toward the east coast they can get as large as 700-2500 acres... The point of the pen is to either train young hounds, teach them to hunt, run, and learn the main point of running their game. Also its used to condition older hounds and get them ready for field trials or just the up coming hunting season.
The pens consist of mostly brush that way coyotes are not caught and killed, because most of us know that in wide open land a hound can out run a coyote. There are also escape routes for the coyote incase they do get pressured too hard. THere are brush piles and small tubes just big enough for coyotes to get into. These tubes are located behind an electic fence also. The fence thats used is 2x4 welded wire thats 8 feet tall. Its bent over a foot at the top to keep the coyotes from climbing out and bent in a foot at the bottom to keep them from digging out.
The coyotes are put in there to be run not to be caught, but sometimes it does happen which costs the pen owner money because live coyotes aren't that cheap. But overall pens are a great tool used to condition hounds. You can just sit on one spot listen to them run all night long, and have no worries about them getting run over or getting on someone elses land that will throw a major fit because the hounds laid a foot on their property. Great way to spend a night. Hope this helps some. MOyotehunter
