I just started loading for a new to me rem 788 and I'm wondering which bullets for deer does everyone prefer.I have loaded some sierra 85 gr. hpbt and they shoot great but I have never used a hollow pt. for deer size game. Shots are typically under 100 yds.My daughter is going to be using this and I was thinking of going to a nosler ballistic tip. But what weight? I didn't want to go with a 100 gr. bullet because my son wants to use the gun coyote hunting after our deer season, that is why I started with the sierra 85gr. If it was me using it I would shoot the sierra for everything. Was trying to get awy with 1 loading for everything. Thanks

I concur with the 85g gkhp bullet also. It does the job on antelope out here to 400 yards w/ease. The next best or IMO better is the Nosler 90 & 95g hunting BT, they hammer antelope and will do the same on deer.

The 85 gr. Sierra HPBT does ok on deer. If you decide on the Ballistic Tip the 95 gr. is the one. One thing to remember is that deer bullets will kill coyotes just fine but the opposite isn't always true.

I've had excellent results with the 85gr Sierra HPBT from everything from deer to crows out of a 6BR at 2850 (running it pretty hard for past few years). I also killed several deer with it few years back using standard 243Win. If running at full potential of a 243 (up to 3300 fps) it will be a little more violent & prolly be best to stay away from shoulders on big deer, but I sure wouldn't feel under gunned with it. If you plan on busting shoulders the 95gr Nosler is the one you want, it's a tough bullet & penetrates very well. However, I have found the 90 Nolser & 85gr sierra to "quicker" killers (less dash-runners when not in CNS). All will conclude dead animals with a decent shot. I have had better luck with the Sierra's shooting well plus they are cheaper if you do a lot of shooting (my little 6BR gets shot a LOT more than a normal deer rifle).

6mm??? don't know yet still working on it. In my many 243', the 85 is the gem, kills anything and a bit cheaper then a Nosler. Anything bigger is hard to get stabilized in most 243's. What you loose in speed you don't gain back with a larger bullet. In my mind a 85 is the optimum bullet in a 243 it's what I plan on with the 6mm I'm building. Only maybe in a Barnes.

What twist .243 barrels have you experienced? 100 - 105 grain bullets shoot very well from the various dozen or so .243 Winchester rifles I have owned over the years. I think this was only a problem with the original .244 Remington. When Remington changed the rifling rate and renamed their cartridge to the 6mm that fixed that issue. That was done a long time ago...

1 in 10 is Norm.
It will shoot 100's just fine but they will shoot an 85 GREAT!
a 1 in 8 will shoot 100 to 115 Fantastic.
I have an old cheap savage 243 22" with a 1 in 10 that I have shot 1000's of rounds and have fine tuned it over the years the best is an 85 spear boat tail 200 yards off a bench, an one inch group is very possible. A 75 Hp will destroy a Pd way out.

I load the Remington Corelokts 100 gr...H-414 or 760 powder...37 gr min-40gr max..OAL is 2.650 is an excellent bullet.. 2800 FPS..

I have had excellent luck with the 85grn HPBT! Truthfully, I load that bullet for myself and Hornady SSTs for others mostly because they believe that that plastic tip is magical. I also like it as a coyote bullet. It seems to hold together well enough that exit holes are a happy(ish) medium of golf ball size. IMHO, one of the best of the dual purpose bullets.

The .243 is one of those rounds where there is so little popular competition that bullets in that caliber are optimized for the .243Win. In a .30 caliber, there are different bullets for the .308Win and the 300WM, in .243 there is only the .243Win to really be concern with. That makes the bullet makers job a whole lot easier.
