Sound suppressor

I know I'm probably opening the flood gates. But I seem to be good at that.

I'm looking to get a silencer for a 22-250. All the ones I've looked at might get it down to 130 decibels. Are there any that can bring it down to say 40ish?

Thanks

Nevermind, I'm still learning about suppressors. I can see that below 100 db's is not possible. Now I just need to pick a good manufacturer.

Nope, not with super sonic ammo.

Just do yourself a favor. Buy a 30cal can so you can use it on a wider variety of rifles.

No.
I run my 30 cal can on my 20VT (221parent case) and my 22cal can on my 221FB. I can't tell the difference between them. You would probably need sound equipment to test it for sure, it's that close. Likewise I run 17FB thru the 22cal can and it sounds about like a high powered air rifle. My 17HMR is much louder.

Just trying to keep guys from making the same mistake I did. No need to buy two when you get the big one to start with. Shooting my 6x47L without the need for earplugs makes it worth every penny.

Before I got my HTG suppressor I got to take a short tour of the factory in Boise. After getting to see how they were made I decided to order one. I did ask if there was a "one size fits all" and was advised to make the exit hole on the can to be fairly close to the diameter of the bullet to make it as quiet as possible. Because the largest varmint caliber I had at the time was a .243 (now traded off) I got the suppressor large enough to work with a 6mm bullet. I never did thread the .243 barrel for the can but I can tell you that I don't think that I gave up much noise with the slightly larger hole. I can and do shoot my .22 centerfires- even my 22-250 and my .220 Swift- without the need for hearing protection of any kind. Sure do like that.

Like was said, if you are ever going to use it on something larger than a .224 bore gun then yes- it makes sense to get a can that will work with different size bullets.

And also like Furhunter said, man oh man are supressors nice. Spent a week shooting prairie dogs in Wyoming a month and a half ago and it was awfully nice not to ever have to put on my muffs on those hot days. And once you buy it it's yours forever. And you will want to use it forever too.

Now that is depending what can you run... IF you can stay caliber specific, that is optimal...
There is a reason they make cans that are cal specific, and most of the time I find they are a bit quieter.
Some 30 cal cans your gaining a bit of internal capacity but then your losing much more out the end because of overbore, and on some 30 cal suppressors you really notice this, others not so much... We designed a suppressor specifically for the 22-250, or high velocity .224's if you will... adding typically an inch to most standard 556 cans which give us almost as much internal area as some 30 cal suppressors but with the tighter bore tolerance, and in turn much quieter... The OPS .224 V.A.P.R.

I scoured a lot of the suppressor forums and here as well and besides decibel reduction you want one the has a minimal POI change. I wanted one that was quiet and accurate. After talking to Skinney and watching those horrible, habit, subliminal inducing videos Oneill ops video posts I got the V.A.P.R. Dang videos.

I have a friend that has a .224 can and a 30 cal can, we put both from the same unnamed company and measured the difference. The 30 cal can was 2 decibals louder.

Wiht the hassle that is involved in getting one, and the costs for getting one, I am waiting on the 30 cal can paperwork to come back. I can put the same can on all of my guns. For this ability, i will give up 2 decibals happily.. It's still miles better than nothing, and sounds like a 22lr

The guys at silencerco when I talked to them at SHOT said similar to what you just mentioned Tbone. They found a 1 decibel difference between a 30 cal can on a 223 and a 223 can on a 223 so why bother with the different tax stamps. I have a 30 cal can for the 6.8 and .223.

The reason is simple. A .30 cal can is longer, and heavier.

With a barrel at 24-26" in a hunting type profile...that can be a huge issue, especially if you plan to shoot with AND without. (although very few ever do)

It's never been about the dB reduction.

Some of these guys tear up at the thought of adding ANY weight to their calling rifles so a 20-30oz 30 caliber suppressor 9.5" long is not a good option when a 15 oz 7" suppressor will perform better and have typically MUCH less POI shift with vs without being attached.

I am one that uses a .30 for everything (that's changing soon) but I don't shoot anything in .224 caliber either. All mine that are .30 or less are 6 and 7mm of some type.
