Blind magazine

Recently acquired a Savage model 10 in 223 and it's the first gun I've loaded for that has a blind magazine. Quickly realized that to get a rather small jump the COL is too long to fit into the magazine. My question is - what is the best way to measure the magazine to figure out my longest COL? how much allowance to I leave for proper feeding?
Thanks in advance

You could pull the box and measure it. Or just load long and seat deeper until they fit. On AR'S I give 'em about 0.005 space. I would think that the shape of the ramps etc. might cause a need to load a bit shorter but certainly YMMV.

To get the most in accuracy in a Rem 788, I have to use it as
a single shot for the very reason you cite. The most accurate
loads are too long for the magazine.

Thought Savage made blind mags the same on all their models....
guess not. I have three older VLP's (Model 12) which were made
with blind mags. Magazines in all three are long enough for
bullets to kiss the lands.

This or do I like have been doing with my Remmy 700 in 6mm, its a 2 shot gun, 1 in the tube and 1 in the mag since they are too long to fit in the well. If it is shooting good groups when seated short enough to fit the magazine run with it that way.

On my Savage's there were two different 223 Mag lengths, I think they lengthened the mag slightly when they added the 204 Ruger. There is a block in the rear of a 223 Mag box that I have replaced with a thinner one. Doing that I ran into the problem of the bullet point hitting the rear edge of the chamber instead of entering and have tweaked them every which way. It seems like the shoulder of the cartridge has to hit the feed ramp to raise the cartridge enough to enter the chamber. I can load to 2.41" with a pointed bullet but need to shorten with large HPs like the 52gr Speer.
