Eotech Holographic 512 ?

It's finally time to replace my cheap Barska scope on my AR.

The Eotech 512's you can now pick up for a little over $400. I kind of like the idea of AA batteries because I have a box full of rechargable ones. The XP and EXP 2/3's use the 123 batteries and are much more compact. They also cost a bit more. I'll probably add a 3x magnifier at some point too.

For you guys who have or have had one, do you like the 512? Performance wise, how does it compare to the XP or EXP 2/3's? This is primarily a plinking or coyote hunting rig.

For a general purpose rifle like you describe I'd look at a Leupold VXR 1.25-4 or Vortex PST 1-4 for similar money and the added bonus of magnification. They both have illumination, can both be used up close with 2 eyes open like the EOTech, but then can zoom in for hunting or longer range plinking.

There's a thread on the predator subforum about an EOTech buy back program.

Thanks Simojo.

I'm not interested in another tube scope. I'm looking for a 1-2 moa low profile dot. The Vortex Venom look interesting too, but it's 3moa.

I'm familiar with the Eotech issues. Are they not addressing this with newly manufactured ones though? Are they still selling ones known to have the issue? I assumed there would be a lot more Eotech users here.

I have one with a flip2side magnifier and did not like it on the ar15. Took it off and put a 1-4x scope on it and it was the best thing that I did. You can pick up the target very fast on 1x. And on 4x my son can hit the 9in steel gong at 400yds 9 out of 10 rounds. The 512 is now on top of my turkey gun. But I don't know if it is going to stay on it.

I have one on my competition AR and it's now coupled with the 3x magnifier that I won at the 2015 PM Hunt...

My only problem that I've had previously was when a Coyote hung up out past 100 yards (without the 3x) and I couldn't be sure of a decent hit for a clean kill due to the reticle size...Otherwise, it's fast and accurate...

Thanks for the info guys!

I live in Wisconsin and sometimes travel to hunt in the southwest. Some February's, that can be a difference of 100 degree's. Since Eotech has admitted to having some issues holding Zero when exposed to large temperature changes, I think I am going to hold of on Eotech for now. I'm really disappointed because their holo dots were exactly what I was looking for. The search continues...

Thanks again for all your input!

I have the EOTech EXPS3-4 and the flip to the side G-33 magnifier. I am aware of the zero shift issue with temperature changes. But I like to hunt and shoot in fair weather and have it zeroed in at that temp. Most of the year I keep my optic inside the house at 75 deg F.

If you are hunting in the cold then I would recommend that you zero at the temperatures that you are hunting and see if that works.

I have confirmed that the zero can shift by up to 4 MOA if you leave the optics where the temperatures fluctuates over a year's time.

I'm not sure if the company has made any changes to the internals of these optics to prevent the zero shifts with temperature changes.

I've tried hunting at night with a scope and found it hard to see though the scope even at 4x low magnification and a spot light being used to light up the scene. I didn't like the idea of trying to look though a soda straw at night like that.

The EOTech when properly zeroed is great for close up work. And the G-33 flip to the side magnifier makes it relatively easy to shoot out to 200 yards with accuracy.

I have the 512 and have had no issues and only ran out of battery once in the 8 years Ive had it. I really like it more than a tube on my coyote rig and have shot em running out to 250yds with it. Probably a lucky shot, but I wouldn't have been able to do that with a scope. I have two Vortex red dots and they won't hold point of aim.

Thanks again for all the input!

I really like the Eotech's and it would have been my choice if I lived in a more mild climate. Due to the known admitted issues by Eotech and the large temperature fluctuations where I live, I went with the "Meprolight Tru-Dot RDS". It should be delivered this week. I may pair it with the Vortex magnifier. I'm not sure on that yet.

Researching the Eotech issue, I'm really disappointed that instead of taking measures to correct the issue, they are just lowering the specs to meet the device as is. That just doesn't sit well with me.
