Shortening LOP on synthetic stocked Savage

My two older kids shoot competitively for 4-H and are doing well. They've both outgrown their little Savage Rascals and I'm looking for an upgrade. It seems that the Savage Mark 1 FVT is the logical upgrade, but I'm concerned that the LOP is a bit long, especially for my daughter, who will likely never have an LOP longer than about 12-12.5 inches. Are any of you familiar with an effective method for shortening the LOP on what I assume is the hollow plastic stock of the FVT? Are there alternative .22 LR target rifles with single shot capability and quality open sights that will work for a shooter of smaller stature?

Sounds like your trying to do things on a little cheaper budget but one thing you may give some thought to is the CZ455 and just put a single shot follower in them for now and when they are a little older/bigger they will be able to use them as a repeater! shorten the stock on them is simple and if you don't take to much off you could add a thicker recoil pad to add the length back... cheaper in the long run in my way of thinking...JMO

Idk what kind of work you're wanting to put into it, but I'd think you could fill the butt up with expandable foam glue in a wood end cap and screw your buttplate into that.

Thanks guys. I don't mind spending money on quality firearms. The eldest just got a Henry Golden Boy for Christmas, and shoots a nice bolt rifle for big game hunting. I see them as investments. The Savage has a reputation for accuracy and is the standard in 4-H shooting around here. I know my son will grow into it, but the daughter, not so much. I'll take a look at the CZ.

I've shortened a number of synthetic Savage and Stevens highpower rifle stocks, everything I shoot has to be shortened. The highpower stocks are hollow but have screw bosses molded into them and and the only way to tell how much you can take off and use the same screw holes is to remove the butt plate. I usually take off the recoil pad , cut a half inch and replace the pad with a butt plate.

You could also cut the stock, make a wood filler and epoxy it in to screw the butt plate to it.

I have the same issue. My LOP is around 12-12.5". I am 5'6" 130#, and since I'm 61, I don't think I'm going to grow any. I have a Savage A17 that with a Photon XT scope could actually use about an 11" LOP due to its known eye relief issue. Wish I knew where to get the nice light synthetic stock stiffened and shortened. I put a new Boyd's stock on it, but it is not short enough, and it is heavy, so I have not used it. One of several reasons I like the AR platform-adjustable stock, for whatever clothing you are wearing, semi-auto, and pistol grip(but I have a fused right wrist that makes it necessary, not a want). If I could find and AR stock for the A17, it would be perfect.

After much consideration, I took your advice. Yesterday I ordered a CZ455 Scout in .22 RF. I like several features - short LOP with option for longer stock later (unlikely unless I commandeer it), nice front sight, single shot follower for removable mag, and pre-threaded for the suppressor I hope to get someday (c'mon Hearing Protection Act!).

I need to order the rear peep sight for it now and have the kid get it sighted in for competition. Will report back after its arrival and testing.

Good deal, You and the kids will be HAPPY that you did. Once you get the suppressor you will have to buy Another one for the Kids...
