17 Tactical

Don't know if it qualifies me as an expert but have owned and shot .17 calibers since the late 1970's.

Of the three you mentioned the .17/223 would be my choice. Lot of .223 brass around and a simple one step operation to neck it down. Just load it and shoot and even though it is a bit less than the .17 Remington it's not enough to say so.

You did not mention it but the .17/204 would be worth a look too.

That is the other name for it. I like mine because of the cheap brass.

I am by far an expert in the .17 caliber area, but you basically have a .17 Remington and .17 Hornet for production rifles. Some do chamber the .17 fireball perhaps, but any of the wild cats or commercial lies somewhere between the two (Remington and Hornet).

Now the .17/204 sounds a lot like the .17 Remington but actually probably has more velocity since the .204 (patent case) is based off the .222 magnum whereas the .17 Remington is based off the plain ol' .222.

I would say the fireball is smack dab in the middle of the Remington and the Hornet.

Both the 204 Ruger and the 17 Remington cartridges are based off of the 222 Rem Mag case.

It would be difficult to make 17 Rem cases (1.796" length) from 222 Rem cases (1.700" length). 223 Rem cases (1.760") can be made into 17 Rem but the neck is reduced in length by about .040".

The 17/204 does have a bit more velocity than the 17 Rem has due to the case shoulder being blown forward from the parent case 222 Rem Mag while the 17 Rem case shoulder is moved back from the parent 222 Rem Mag case shoulder. The 17/204 case also has less body taper than the17 Rem case has.

What's not to like about the 17 Tactical? You can use good 223 Lapua brass and shoot 30 grain bullets at 4000 fps... It really is a great fur round for Coyotes. I have loved shooting mine over the last 8+ years.

Lyman's 49th manual has it wrong then. It says the .17 Remington is based off the .222. They should change that. I thought the .17 Rem was based off the .222 magnum, but then I read the Lyman's manual. Thanks for clarifying.
