Form 1

Anyone done the form 1 for manufacturing a suppressor. Is it similar to just buying a suppressor. Worth the trouble or not?

i have a form 1 suppressor. i did a solvent trap style build, with freeze plug baffles. pretty simple, but impressively effective. i traded $$ for weight, so its a bit heavy at 22oz - but that also puts me in the ballpark of a silencerco Saker 7.62 as well so its not outrageous or anything. i love it.

the paperwork was similar to my form 4, but aside from that you of course have to make the thing and have the basic machining skills to complete the build.

and you gotta be able to do it at home.

building them in a commercial manufacturing facility is a no-no. so if your buddy happens to own a machine shop - dont risk getting him in trouble too by asking him to tinker around after hours.

just to clarify, with a form 1 you cannot start your build until your stamp is approved. if you start manufacturing before your paperwork gets done you're on the wrong side of the law. even a single piece is considered a suppressor - so a single baffle, etc. the safest thing to do is file your paperwork, get your stamp, acquire the materials for the build, get your tube engraved, and then build it out.

good luck, i hope you're as happy with yours as i am with mine!

How long did it take to get the stamp? Curious if it takes as long as a purchased suppressor . I assume it would. If so I will just go to a dealer and do it all. That way the dealer can be sure the paper work is correct. Thankyou for the information.

the time is roughly the same for form1 and 4's. The suggestions about doing a trust still apply to both a form 1 and 4. On a trust you can let others use it when you are not there, for example my bother is a trustee on the trust.

For a form 1 to be 'worth it' over buying a can you have to have a few things. You have to already have the equipment to build it. It's not cost effective to buy a lathe or drill press and tooling to only build 1 can. If you are going to build multiples, maybe. If you already have the tools it is very cost effective. You can go the solvent trap route, or you can turn your own parts in a lathe.

Setting aside the cost of machines and tools, and assuming you already have them, you can save a lot of money and build a high quality can. Without a lathe, just having a drill press and going with solvent trap parts or even freeze plugs, you will pay about $200 dollars in parts and an additional $200 for the stamp. So $400 all in on a titanium can that will work on any center fire rifle up to .30 cal non magnums. Compare that to an all titanium can from a manufacturer at around $1000.

If you have a lathe, you can buy the raw materials. I have built cans for .30 caliber, all titanium with 17-4 blast baffles for less than $300 including the stamp. That's less than $100 dollars in parts. They work very well on .22 center fire as well.

In my opinion, building just one can isn't cost effective. just buy what you want and move on. If you plan to have several, especially if you already have tools, you can save a bundle.

Does the new E-file form 1 work for cans too? A friend just got an E-form SBR approved in 12 days, start to finish.
If I had a lathe, and the smarts to build cans, I'd have one for every gun.

I havent used E-file since 41F went into effect. At that time E-file was only for trusts and not individuals. I believe it is still the same, and that individuals still file by mail. But E-file is for cans as well as SBR's.

That is the advantage of the form 1, at least to me. The money saved on buying cans can be used to buy more stamps to build myself.

Form 1 for suppressor build (individual )Check cashed 2/27/18 approved 7/11/18 135 days
You can E file the form 1 for a suppressor build. If the site doesn't go down again.
Seen on another forum one came back in 14 days ,not sure it was legit or not

I recently did two Form 1's as individuals for SBR's, both came back in less than 14 days.

one question. how can you get a stamp before you start the build. you have to have a serial number first. or do you make up a serial number then put it on later?

with a form1 submission on a build from scratch...as the "manufacturer" you create the serial number.

so you write the number down and then when you get your stamp, engrave that approved serial # onto the form1 can.

now if you're form-1'ing a SBR, you either use the SN on the unbuilt lower you're going to SBR, or create one to engrave one from the 80% build you're going to complete later. although most folks who are building a SBR usually will build it as a pistol first for function testing and then only change the buffer tube and add the stock once the stamp shows up and they've had it all engraved properly.
