Tested some Hornady Superformance 53gr Vmax ammo yesterday. 3600 fps (3465 fps on box) out of Tikka 223 Varmint (slow 22-250 range ) 3300 fps out of 18.5” barrel.

The other superformance Vmax 243 ammo was always under spec by a long shot 3740 fps 58 gr (3925 fps) 75 gr 3391 (3580 fps box) 24” barrel.

I’ve read elsewhere Hornady is often low on velocity. It was great to see that it was above. Now I need to replicate that with some hand loads.

I chrongraphed my 243 with 22” barrel yesterday. I used the Hornady 75 grain superformance. I was disappointed with velocity results. Temp outside was 15 degrees and average velocity was only 3150. Also did it during the summer on a 75 degree day and it was 3190.

Federal 75 gr Vmax will have a similar velocity for less $. 20” barrel Federal 3317fps Hornady SF 3322 fps

24” barrel Federal 3427 fps Hornady 3391 (less than box)

Good reason to load your own. I can load 3400 FPS ammo in a 20” 243 with 75 gr VMax
