Cold bore shot

buddy of mine has one of those SASS barrels on his g2 dpms, and like yours with fgmm, damn thing is a shooter! holds about ½ moa out to 500, and i've seen him go 2 for 3 on our club 1½" challenge gong at the same distance. and the 3rd didnt miss by much!

he had originally bought it as a 16" carbine, but that barrel was *trash*. 4-5 MOA depending on ammo, including fgmm and hornady match 168 amax. he got it sent back under warranty just as big green was folding up shop and all they could offer him was a SASS barrel.. i was like "YES! SNAG THAT! QUICK!". turned a turd into a tack driver for him!

I also have two DPMS 18" AR15 SASS rifles and they shoot the same way... just down right accurate.

Clean vs. dirty barrel...

My Dad's 1966 Winchester Model 70 in 30-06, hates a clean barrel. The first shot might not even be on paper at 100yds, while shot #2 and 3 is somewhere on paper, but not consistent. After shot 3, it settles down and shoots sub-MOA until about 22-23 shots, then the groups open up again.

My 1963 Sako L461 in 222RemMag will place the first shot on a clean barrel right where it is supposed to, and it place the 50th shot on the first.

Each rifle is unique to itself.

I differ than @Bowhntr6pt on the cleaning between range sessions. Doesn't mean his method is wrong.

The thing that is the same is wet patching for carbon removal. CLP will continue to break down the carbon up as it sits in the bore. I do the same for when I'm returning to the range within 2 weeks for load work outs.

Again another opinion which means nothing in the grand scheme is. The CBS deviance most refer to break down to the barrel quality. I'm of the opinion that "most" of the time for the populace is it's actually "Cold Shooter" . Again opinion.

That’s incredible

Not really... when I was a Sniper Team Leader (five man team) none of us cleaned the bore until accuracy started to slip. Every operational Sniper I've ever known does the same. Anyone who shoots a rifle and pays attention will tell you a barrel will settle after a certain amount of rounds and stay consistent for a while depending on round type, volume of fire, and weather conditions.

It's not necessary to completely/thoroughly clean a barrel after each range/shooting session in order to maintain good accuracy. What is important though is keeping a good data book so you can spot issues and keep a running round count. If you completely clean a barrel, odds are extremely high your CB shot will be quite different from your tenth shot or fiftieth shot.

Here in central Florida my duty rifle (Rem 700 LTR) stays in my patrol truck subject to a hot and humid climate... all I do after each range/shooting session is run a moist patch down the bore to prevent rust as the bore isn't chrome lined. I do the exact same with all my other rifles.

I urge anyone who doubts the merits of this to keep a log book and give it a try for a few hundred rounds.

Patch moistened with water, oil, CLP, solvent? I'd hate to use the wrong stuff.
