Shooting with Progressive Lenses

Just picked up some new glasses. Since I’m old they’re progressive lenses. Shot a few gophers and I’ve missed more than I normally do (rarely miss) with my CZ457 with 2-7 Crossfire. Have other ole guys had issues shooting with progressive lenses? Should I get a pair of glasses that aren’t progressives to shoot with? They have taken some getting used to. My eyes aren’t bad, no restriction on my license, It is nice to sharpen things up at distance.

The younger guys might laugh but it’s part of getting older. A Costco 3 pack of cheaters will be in your stocking sometime after 45…

Been shooting with them for I don't know how many years now. Never noticed it to be any problem.

If your progressives are fitted properly, your line of sight is through the upper part of the lens, not the bifocal part. Shot both iron sights and scopes w/o any issues for many years.

Tried progressive glasses years ago it didn't take me long to go back to a straight bifocals. I do have the bifocal set low on the lense so I can see what I'm stepping on. I was driving truck and vacuum unloading railcars. I had to jump from railcar roof to railcar roof, the first time with progressives the landing disappeared in a haze, good bye progressives.

Like hm1996 I shoot out of the top of my glasses for scopes. Shotguns my bifocal is low enough to not get in the way. I do need to wear readers on the computer so I don't have tip my head back so far.

Funny story about progressives, bifocals and readers. I normally used progressives for all my rifle/pistol shooting because that is what I wore 24/7. Handgun shooting, I had a sweet spot right at the very top of the progressive bifocal that really sharpened up my front sight w/handgun, but had to really get my chin up to use it.
Came time to re-up CCW one year I was doing a bit of dry firing in the loading room one night and picked up a pair of my wife's readers on the way in. Sharpened up that 1911 sight like a new dollar. Hmm, decided to take her readers to qualify. Forget the exact course of fire, but started out @ 7 yards IIRC, maybe an intermediate string???, but the last 10 shots were timed fire at 25 yards. On command to fire, raised the pistol, front sight clear as a bell, but the target looked like I had a drop of water on the glasses....a blue, shapeless blob!!!! Dumped the glasses and I could see the target but no front sight. Guess which are the 25 yard shots: 😲

Readers at computer work better that’s for sure.

I’ll be mindful of which part of the lens I’m looking through.

Thanks for the replies!

I wear prog. but hunt with bifocals with the bifocal only being about 5/16" tall. Like AWS said, makes foot placement much safer.
I found archery shooting spots to be much more accurate with the bifocal because with prog. the rx is perfect in the lt/rt center of the lenses then deteriorate a little as it gets to the edges. My sight picture was just at the lt edge of my rt lense and was never in focus.

I have Randolph Ranger shooting glasses, they have a large field of view through the top portion of the lens so that doesn't happen.

Lens size matters w/progressives. I've worn Rayban shooing glasses long before I needed prescription glasses. Did try one pair of titanium frames with a smaller lens that did prove unsatisfactory for normal use but especially (bad) for shooting.

I have worn bifocals while shooting for at least 30 years now. When I put my head on the stock I am looking over the bottom lens. I can't shoot a rifle with iron sights because the sights are way out of focus.

I don't have any problems hunting with a shotgun or shooting at Trap, Skeet or Sporting Clays targets because I am looking at the targets or the bird and animals I am shooting at.

I have been wearing glasses since I was 5 years old.

In the same boat BOB, been wearing them for 69 yrs (since I was 6) except for 2 yrs after cataract surgery but then lost vision in the left so have been wearing again to protect the only one I got.
