New (to me) coyote vocalization

I was hunting last Friday night in PA. On a stand around 9pm after a few distress calls, I howled and immeadiately, had what sounded like 3 or 4, howl right back. They sounded like they were 200-300 yards away. Then they started yipping and barking, so I yipped and barked back. Then one(?) was making a sound that I can best describe as a goose honk. As he kept (for a lack of a better term or my ignorance of what the sound is called) honking, we could tell he was closing ground fast. Honking the entire way.

Anyone ever hear this honking noise I'm talking about? Ever hear a cow elk call? It sounded like that, except backwards. Instead a high note/ low note, it was low/high.

I've heard a lot of coyotes but never had one sound like a goose. Sure it wasn't more like a low pitched challenge bark? If not, you've got me stumped.

No geese. This coyote walked to within 16 paces making that noise. There was no mistake where the sound was coming from. Someone else suggested a female in heat.

Yea! That's me there. Mom says I'm still her baby.
 
Smilin, what howler did you use? Hand or electronic? Which ever, you did a fine job of convincing this group of coyotes that you were a competitor/intruder. They responded to your initial howl with a group yip howl which is a territorial claim/declaration. One of the functions of the gyh is passive territorial defense which is why under certain conditions a howl will literally rip it out of them.
The vocalization that the male was issuing as he approached you was a standard threat bark howl. They are very individual and you can hear several different kinds on my video. One coyote's tbh sounds like a kazoo whistle, another's sounds like a calf bawl, and another's is so lazy that he just lays down and issues a half hearted threat that sounds kinda like what you describe. How did the encounter end?

KABOOM! ....damn.

It was so dark I had trouble finding him in my scope at 16 yards which somehow got turned up to 9x!
