Iron sights vs. Scope

I was curious about how many people actually prefer iron sights over scopes for coyote hunting. The irons are faster if the coyote sneaks up on you or if he is moving. A good scope allows you to make a better shot at longer distances.

Any opinions?

I take which one I feel would be better in the surroundings I'm going to set up in. In close cover I like iron. In open areas I like scopes. I'm of the old school(I'm 60). I was brought up on iron sights to hunt predators. Scopes I'm getting use too. If you have an option, take the one you feel more comfortable with at that time for the cover you are going to be in. IMHO

Since my eyes and reflexes are not what they used to be, I prefer a scope. I use a 2-7x Leupold on my AR for the Coyotes and competition. Dropping down to 2x lets me get fast target acquisition and if I'm in a competition where there are distant targets, I can always crank it up higher. Keeping it on the 2x lets me shoot with both eyes open. My bifocals tend to screw me up on iron sights.

i havent turned loose on the coyotes yet with the iron sights but i use them on deer when i drive or am walking thick stuff but if its gonne be shots past 150 im going for the scope

Once I get my new AR-15, I plan on sticking a 2x red dot on it.... should allow for fast target aquisition at close range (both eyes open most likely) and still allow for a little power for 100 yard shots and the such.

Iron sights are fine. I shoot a lot of CAS so I am used to shooting fast and hitting with iron sights. The advantage of a scope is that you not only see your target, you see what is in front of it. Mainly grass and brush. Scopes allow you to shoot through brush better especially with these light, fast bullets we shoot.
Up to a hundred yards, I have a .357 with a tang sight that I could nail anything with. I prefer to shoot a scoped .223 just so there are no excuses.

dave3006,
That is the exact reason why I switched to open or iron sights on my AR. I had a Nikon 3x9 on my AR before, but had too many varmints get too close in a number of different sitiuations.

Each hunting situation requires different hunting equipment. I believe that a red dot scope might work just as well as open sights.

Good hunting, Bowhunter57

The reason for asking, is that a couple weekends ago I had coyotes get within 10' of me. The first time, I missed with my scoped Remington 700. I changed to my Garand, and got the next one.
