I need some holster recommendations for a S & W 629 Classic 6 1/2". I am leaning towards a shoulder holster. Any thoughts, opinions or recommendations are more than welcome.

What about some factory ammo?

Shot some .44 Special 246gr LRN that were very accurate, light recoil and a joy to shoot even for my girlfriend.

Need some hunting and plinking ammo. suggestions.

Is there any factory ammo. that duplicates the old Elmer Keith 250gr loads? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Someday I will reload but for now factory ammo. will have to do! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

You didn't mention your body type and that can play a big part of what sort of holster is comfortable. Tall and lean, with a long upper torso is the best suited for a shoulder holster with long barreled handguns. Shorter, stocky builds have more trouble with such a rig. When I say "shoulder holster" I'm talking of the traditional holster that basically rides under your arm along the side of your body.

A better bet IMHO for such a large handgun, especially when concealment isn't of concern (and despite Dirty Harry - there are better handguns to conceal), is the "BANDOLER" style. This holster rides at an angle across the front of the chest and is much better suited for real heavy handguns and long barrels. Especially for hunting purposes.

.44 Magnum loads abound. For Keith type hard cast heavy hunting loads, Federal's Cast Core and Buffalo Bore LBT loads are top notch. Don't overlook Winchester's 250 grain Nosler Partition hollowpoint. It's a real deal killer!

I use a the bandolier style shoulder holster. I use Hornady XTP's in all of my hunting revolvers. I switched back to the 240 gr. XTP's in my Ruger SRH 44 mag. I was using the 300 gr. but for deer here in Ohio the 240's will work just fine plus they grouped a little better.

i just tryed a sholder holsterfor my new 357,bought it over the net.it came,i tryed it for a weekend, did not like it at all.as with your prospect,my gun also has a 6.5in.i inturn ordered a nother holster from oldtradingpost.com in the cross draw model, and love it.by the way i have a shoulder holster to git rid of. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

During my career in Law Enforcment I have tried every type set up I think there is I personally do not like shoulder rigs as they tend to really begin draging towards the end of the day esspesially with a heavy revolver like the S&W and even if it is stainless rideing in your pit area is not really a good idea for a hand gun I prefer for a hunting field carry a cross draw or traditional belt holster Bianchii make several good ones just remember to get a good heavy wide belt. The bandoleer is good for longer barrels like 7.5 and 9 or 10 inchers with scopes Just My opinion.
BTW I have owned several M29's and 629's that is till Ruger came out with the RedHawk and Super Redhawk I have not owned a S&W Large frame since. But that is me. I found that they tend to begin shooting loose after a few thousand rounds but not Rugers.
As far as Ammo goes I handload almost all my Hunting and Practice Ammo. so I am not really familiar with many of the newer Brands except by hearsay. I always liked Remington 240 265 and 180's depending on what I was intending to shoot at. The Winchesters are a good choice also. But back when I would occasionally buy factory they didn't load cast bullets that was one reason I started Hand loading.

I've used a 6.5 inch 629 classic to hunt deer for the past 10 years or so. I use an Uncle Mikes nylon shoulder holster to carry the revolver most of the time. Using this type of holster allows me to get in and out of tree stands without having my revolver catching on things as it does if carried in a hip holster. If I mount a scope on this revolver I use and Uncle Mikes bandalier type holster. It also works well for hunting from tree stands.
For hunting deer with my 629 I shoot Winchester Supreme 250 grain Partition gold ammo. I've killed several deer with this load, and it performs very well.

Good hunting y'all.. Coyote 6974

While the thought of a shoulder holster sounds appealing, I have to second most of the comments already made. I've tried shoulder holsters and never found one that was comfortable or convenient over a long period of time.

I have a 6" S&W mod 29 and use a Hunter cross draw belt holster for it. As stated, it needs a wide belt but it keeps the weapon in close to the body, doesn't pull on the left shoulder like a shoulder holster. allows for comfort and access in a seated position, and can be drawn with either hand.

I think the only time a bandolier rig would be better is if you have a scope on the pistol.

I have found that with my ruger .480 a cross draw holster works great. I have tried a shoulder holster in the past and with a 7 inch barrel I felt like the I was in the first batman movie when Jack Nickelson was pulling that long barreld pistol from his waist line.
