washing fur?

I wash any that would have blood or mud on them. I don't have a drain in my fur room so I use five gallon buckets for the wash and rinse, in cold water. I snap the water out of the hide length wise then stretch it.T.20

I washed one and stretched it and when it was dried and I combed it out the gurdhairs came out. so I am hesetent to wash another one.

I'll wash blood out of mine with luke warm water...no soap. Wring it out by running your hand down the pelt "with the fur". Do it several times then hang it up from a rafter or something and let it drip dry for a few hours. Don't worry...the "hide" won't begin to dry in that time. Then I'll flesh and put on a stretcher. I never flesh before washing. And I've never had guard hairs pull out unless I've fleshed too close and exposed the roots.....seldom a problem with coyotes but sometimes happens with coons when I'm trying to go too fast.

When I have time I wash everything in cold water with Dawn detergent. Really gets the blood and dirt out. Be sure to rinse well. I then put them on the strearchers where I flesh and sew holes, then streach. (I use wood streachers). I have never had a problem with any hair slipping.
If time is short I will at least rinse the fur with the hose.

Skin, flesh, spray with garden hose, wash with shampoo in bucket, rinse with garden hose, drip dry overnight, and stretch. Seems to work well for me. Makes good looking and smelling pelt. Easy to brush.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure why the hair sliped, I thought it had somthing to do with the water. The pelt was an early one still blue in spots could that have somthing to do with it?

I normally spray the muddy animals with a water hose prior to skinning then hang to dry. Then skin after they dry. I don't wash them if they aren't muddy, blood spots get wiped. I always check for burrs prior to fleshing and brush them out if needed.(learned that the hard way)

Seeing the looks on the faces of those grumpy house wives as you load the washers full of dead dogs would be priceless!!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I washed a fox that coyotes killed in my trap last week, skinned him, washed him in a bucket with dawn , rinsed and hand wrung him, then sewed him (that took 40 min) and streched him on a wire strecher with a fan running on him, turned him the next day. Sold him last sunday at a auction for $28.00, cant complaine!!!

I wash every one of mine. I first skin, flesh them and sew up any holes. I put them on a rack Gene'O, my hunting partner, made for me and spray them from head to tail with a garden hose. The rack is made from 4 inch PVC pipe about 6 feet long. The pipe is mounted vertically on a metal frame. I have two pipes mounted on my frame so I can wash more than one. Any blood or dirt is forced downwards by gravity as you move the garden hose from top to bottom. I used to wash mine in 5 gallon buckets, but this system is alot quicker (and not as cold on the hands when its 6 degrees outside). After I take them off the frame, I sling them around for about two minutes to spin off the large part of the water and then let them drip dry in my shed. When they're mostly dry, I turn them back to skin side out and put them on stretchers.

Mason Jarrs Wash rack.
This works really good, made out of 4" ABS pipe and some light gage 1-1/4" box steel. 6' feet tall, fits most coyotes and you might want a 3" PVC for foxes.

After I skin and flesh my fox I throw them in the wifes washing machine. I use dawn dishwashing detergent, and some downy fabric softener. It works AWESOME. Just have to do it on cold wash and gentle cycle.
