surface rust? kroil?

I have several 22 rimfires that have surface rust on the barrel and actions. This is from poor storage and maintenance conditions of the previous owner. What is the best way to clean this up without damaging bluing?

+1 Weasel. One other tip, don't swirl the 0000 steel wool over the area. Go "with the grain" so to speak in one direction back and forth and you'll do less damage to the blue.

Try this oldtime and simple trick for removing surface rust.If the rust is not over a large surface area rub with a penny and then remove the copper residue by rubbing with a cloth and gun oil.The copper is softer than the steel but harder than the rust so it scrapes the rust off without damaging the gun metal or blueing.Naturally,it does'nt work on pitted rust.

No, no steel wool! Hate to be contrary, but before you use steel wool, try this.

Soak the rust spots with kroil or marvel mystery oil and take a round bladed screw driver, such as a philips....be sure it is round blade, and rub it briskly across the rust spots, keeping the rust wet w/oil. The rounded surface of the screw driver will not scratch the bluing adjacent to the rust and the rust will be worn smooth and blend in with remaining finish.

Steel wool can remove the bluing, leaving a bright spot if not very careful.

i have done both the flitz and the 0000 steel wool with kroil both work well. but do be careful with the steel wool it will remove the blueing if you work it to much

I try to not answer a question, unless I have actually experienced it for my self. But here goes. I have never tried this but did read about it in a book about refinishing firearms many years ago. The author used a nickel to rub the patina. said it would take the high spots and actually blend it with the metal.

Disclaimer: I have never tried it and can not say wheter it works. You may want to give it a try.
