6.5 Grendel

New here, but I'm wondering if anyone has checked out the 6.5 Grendel - a new AR caliber. It's got some impressive ballistics and adapts to existing .223/5.56 lowers with a simple swap of the upper. Check it out at

I'm here in Utah, and I'm thinking it might make an AR into a fine all-around rifle for desert carry (not worrying about really big game, of course), and might just be the ultimate coyote round.

Thoughts?

Welcome to the board 10mm.

I have a 22 wildcat similar to this in that it adapts to the AR. It will run 55's at 3450. In my bolt gun it will run 55's at 3600 and 80's at 3000.

Me and a buddy of mine built identical 18" Overwatch 6.5 Grendels for yote hunting.
We used the 120gr BT with 1/2 MOA accuracy.
Steve shot a coyote at 325 yards and she fell in it own tracks.
The 123gr Scenars out of the 18" barrel almost duplicate the same balistics as the 175gr .308 out to 800 yards.
Wolf ammo is comming out with their 6.5G match (soft tip as well)ammo sometime this spring.

Hey, Muss -

That's quite a shot! I'm torn between a FAL build or an AR with 5.56 and 6.5 Grendel uppers. I like the .308, but the AR could give me a yote gun, a good 5.56, and a good 'dog gun with a varmint upper. So many choices, so little time, so little money!

Muss, if you've got any pix, I'd love to see them.

Steve - that is PERFORMANCE! What do you call this wildcat, and where do you get barrels, uppers, etc.?

buddy, don't forget a wssm upper for deer! I wouldn't take nothing for my dtech built 25 wssm upper, oh and the 458 socom upper by tromix will hammer a black bear!

Yeah the Grendel is a great round and I will get one again but not until all brass issues are solved. It sucks not being able to shoot a gun. We reloaded but brass was hard to come by so when your hunting with it it sucked becuase your were more worried about finding the brass than the dog.

At this time you can buy a barrel / bolt / gas block kit in 6.5 Grendel and simply switch them out on your present AR-15, presuming that you already have one.
It makes the switch pretty painless. Other than that you need the correct magazines as .223 caliber magazines are not interchangable. C Produgts has good quality magazines.

The 6.5 Grendel improves greatly on the standard .223 round and runs the effective range & stopping power up a notch or two. Other than looking at the bore diameter or the actual cartridges you cannot even visually tell that you have anything better than a regular AR.

I just got mine a couple of weeks ago and am still wringing it out. Like Steve Aryan mentioned brass is an issue in the short term. It was out of supply for a few months but is once again available. Black Hills and Wolf both have loaded ammo in the works. If you were to buy an upper the ammo would probably show up before the upper.

Hey, .260 - who did you get your upper from? Did you buy it from Alexander Arms or one of the (few) other vendors who offer uppers? I notice Les Baer is planning to add a 6.5 Grendel to his line up. That should be a very nice rifle!

I bought my Grendel upper from CSS (Competition Shooting Sports) because I wanted the side charging handle and the heaviest 20" barrel contour possible threaded to utilize a suppressor.

Some of the guys like Chris Mussman and Steve Aryan hunt but I am strictly a target shooter. After saying that, it is true that I take some guys out coyote hunting but I just take care of the calling and let them do the shooting. Killed all I wanted to back when I was younger. I took one of the new guys out over the Summer and he got a coyote at a laser verified 608 yards with his 6mm XC tactical bolt rifle. One shot.

The Grendel is only my second AR with my first being a Rock River match grade service rifle so I know very little about them. My intention is to use the Grendel in some of the tactical rifle matches such as the Snipers Hide Cup and the Tac Pro individual match.
