heavyshot choke?

Hey fellas, Do you have to use a Heavyshot choke when using Dead coyote. I've been using it in my Bakail combo 12ga/.223 with a full choke but, my buddy said that wasn't a good idea. Should I be using a heavyshot choke and if so should it be full, modified, etc.... any thoughts appreciated. Thanks, Brad

I dont know about dead coyote but i shoot size 2 heavy shot out of my turkey choke which is extra full, and get excellent results. Heavy shot is softer than steel so you can use a tighter choke.

Hey Brad, I have the same gun, but haven't tried the Dead Coyote ammo due to cost. How is it doing with your full choke? All I've tried is Turkey loads and #4 Buck, but I hear the Dead Coyote is awesome.

I've heard both said of using a "normal construction" choke for Hevi-Shot. Some say it's alright, others say it's a bad ideal. I lean toward the thought that says to use a choke designed for Hevi-Shot and steel to be on the safe side. A .12 ga. 3" load of Dead Coyote does great from about a .680" choke constriction.

I purchased the Carlson's choke tubes from cabelas for 29.99 and they state that it is good for lead, steel and hevi-shot right on the package.

ARCOREY, Not sure how it patterns. Ain't shot at a target yet but, wiped out a couple of cats at about 30-40 yds. worked good. Brad

Can I use other manufacturers' firearms / choke tube
Any modern shotgun, in good working condition, designed or recommended for use with steel shot, should be suitable for use with Hevi-Shot. We recommend that a consumer contact the manufacturer for its recommendation.

As a result of our extensive testing, we believe that the limited number of rounds used in Turkey Hunting is unlikely to create any more than cosmetic rub marks on chokes not rated for use with steel shot. However, the manufacturer of the choke tube should be contacted concerning its recommendations regarding the suitability for use with Remington Hevi-Shot loads.

What after-market choke tubes are suitable for use with Hevi-Shot
Any choke tube that is manufactured from high-quality steel, such as stainless, should be acceptable for use with Hevi-Shot. Choke tube manufacturers such as Rhino, Patternmaster, Carlson's, Truglo and Trulock offer Turkey choke tubes that are suitable for use with Hevi-Shot.

I would be sure to oil the threads on the chokes in case a steady diet of Hevi ceases the threads. You might obtain great longer range patterns but the Turkey chokes and super fulls are too much for Hevi Shot.

I'd test a pattern with your full choke and just for kicks i'd try a modified choke, I've seen better patterns with a more open choke with the hevishot ?? but this was for waterfowl

There are several Hevishot chokes on the market. Some just for HS turkey loads, some for HS waterfowl loads. These are not for T size Dead Coyote shells. Here were my results at 50 yds. inside a 12" circle. Remington 11-87 26" barrel. [w/ 3" D.C. T shot]
REM.X-tra full [.688 dia]--30-35% pellets in circle.
REM.xxtra full [.665 dia]--45-50% " " " .
Carlson DeadCoyote [.665 dia]--50-55% " " " .

I think there's 51 or 52 pellets in each shell. I haven't tested any farther out, but I feel good shooting at 70 yds.
I got better, consistent centering of the groups after added a red dot sight. Gets too expensive testing alot.

I have the same gun in 308/12 gauge. I patterned it with various choke tubes including after market Trulock tubes. Turns out that the extended turkey choke tube shot buck sizes 4 and 00 the best. I also bought an extended tube in extra full. The turkey tube model number PH12670 is what the manufacturer (Mr. Trulock) recommends for dead coyote loads and what I am using for buck shot next season.
