Critters in Alaska

Are there any coyotes as far north as Anchorage ? And how long does darkness last during winter ? Or is it far enough south that the sun comes up a couple of hours a day ?

When I was there (1973 to 1975) I didn't see any coyotes. That might have changed. Did see a wolf (couldn't get a shoot at it).
As for the sunlight question, even in December there were at least 4 hours a day. You have to get a lot further North before you get to the no sunlight in winter area (north of Fairbanks).

Chris about summed it up. I was there for five years care of uncle sam. I left in 1979. When the rabbit cycle is high there's great rabbit hunting. A good 10-22 is a lot of fun there. I never saw any coyotes either. Winter is a bummer even though you get several hours of daylight in Anchorage during the winter. The payoff though is in the summer you can fish for 18 hours a day.

I was back there about four years ago before I quit trucking and I couldn't believe how much the area has grown.

I lived in Tok for a span. Shot a couple of coyotes and a truckload of foxes. Couldn't connect with a wolf or a lynx however, I did see my fair share. The foxes responded to a call really well all winter. The coyotes were hit and miss but I am guessing that is because they don't have the numbers. Sunlight depends on how far north you will be and the time of winter. In Fairbanks for example, you will probably see the sun for 3-4 hrs a day during the Winter Solstice.

Lots of coyotes up here. The trick is getting them to come in readily. They are far from the top of the wild food chain up here, even in winter.

The sun in the Anchorage day is up for 5 or so hours at our darkest, but it never gets truly dark because of the glow off of the snow from the moon and other ambient light.

Hope this helps.

Darkness lasts from sun down to sun up. Kinda does the same thing in summer. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I couldn't help myself /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif, I just had to say that /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

deathdealer,
Check out this site and search for Coyote's, it'll tell you all about the locations around Alaska.

I actually "saw" my first Alaskan Yote yesterday around Fairbanks. There are guys who get Coyotes along the Tanana River, but they're not stacking up fur like you see on the calling DVD's. There's just so much space up here and access to them is the toughest thing. You really need a snowmachine and snowshoes/skis to get off the beaten trails and access the game.
