i was looking at midway usa web site the other day and came across this scope. it was a simmons whitetail 6x20. it is a cheap scope but the reviews on this thing were 5 star. and i dont mean just a couple. there was a bunch of reviews and they were almost all 5 star. what the scoop on this scope? lee

Well they are not a U.S. Optics or a Nightforce so get rid of that thought. I bought one and mounted it on a 458 Win Mag and shot the "box" with it. No problem. Since then it is mounted on a 22rf and is an inside 100yd Gopher Gun.

My only dislike of the scope is the fact that Simmons is now owned by Weaver/Meade Optical. I have read many horror stories about "customer un-sevice" on different shooting forums. The scope is fine, I just hope I don't need service.

Best wiashes, Bill

Hi Lee

Last summer I was shooting praire dogs with a guy that had one on his .204. I was using my 17 Rem topped with a 6.5-20 Leupold. We swapped guns for a few shots and OK, it wasnt a Leupold but no matter, I was impressed with his scope. I was even more impressed when he said that he got it for $100 (at the time) from Midway. It was about 1/6 the price that I had paid for that Luppy and much better than I think that it had a right to be. After I got home from that trip, I ordered one for myself. It is in the box as it came from Midway just waiting for my next varmint rifle, whatever it will be, to be mounted on. It may not be the best piece of glass that I ever looked through, but it is the best $100 piece of glass that I ever looked trough. And this is saying a lot coming from a scope whore like me!

I'll have to disagree completely on this and I have two, both sitting in the toolbox in the prybar drawer. Both of the ones I have came on rifles so I didn't have to pay much for them. If these had 5 star ratings on somebody's web site then I must say it must be on a 20 star scale. I can only describe looking through these as being like looking through thick plexiglass smeared with Vasoline. I say that for $100 just pretend you need two and get a VX-1/Burris/Nikon.

Wow. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gifAll I can say to that is that I'm sure glad my scope isn't like that! I would have sent it back pronto! The only reason I ordered the one that I have was because I was so impressed with the one on my friends gun. Maybe their quality control aint that good and a lemon gets though from time to time, but I sure like the one that I got. I'm keeping it you bet.

Those things have been "on sale" for a long time. Mine cost something like $89 about 10-12 yrs ago. It's a big scope but despite the large objective lens, optics weren't very sharp or particularly bright. That scope is maybe one step above mediocre. It's worth about what it costs, but no more. I used mine a few times then sold it. Buy good stuff to begin with and don't mess with cheap stuff just because you like the price.

A shooting buddy has one on his 22-250 and it sure is nice. I wonder if the quality control at Simmons had improved since the earlier ones were made. When I get my next project gun built I think that is what I am going to put on it. At least until I can afford me a Zeiss or a high end Leupold anyway.

I apologize Rustydust, I really don't like to bad mouth things that other people are using if they like them and I don't recall doing much of that here overall. If you like yours more power to you. I originaly made my post on the way to a meeting and was probably a little hasty and I don't like not taking time to give out what I feel. BUT, and here is the big but, I came home tonight and looked through both of my Whitetails in the prybar drawer and lo and behold both were fogged up. Granted mine are probably older models but that is what I have to go on at this point I would have a hard time recommending them.

BTW - If anybody sees me selling a rifle (not that I will I still have never sold one) then buyer be ware if I say it has a fine Simmons Whitetail on it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

I have one mounted on a 30-06 and I will give it 5 stars for the price... I have a VXIII and honesly there isn't that big of a difference, and sure not $600+ more.. I know everyone has been burned by cheap scopes and I am no exception but the Whitetail Classic is a good scope ..not for the money but a good scope period..Had mine about a year with no problems I am going to order another one soon and put it on my 257 roberts. That is how I came across the scope on midway read the reviews and took a chance. I don't much care about their customer service its not a 1k scope... All I can say is mine is crisp and clear, shoots well, holds point of impact through all the ranges.. very bright and would buy it again without batting an eye.. I haven't decided if I am going with the mil dot yet, its new just out... the cross hairs are a little thick for targets but its a hunting scope. If you don't like it send it back, but I think you will be surpised when you look through it..

P.S You are talking about the simmons whitetail classic 6.5x20x50 right?

Rehab might be the best place to start. Give it a try man, one day at a time is best advise I can offer.

You guys can say what you want ... I answered skeetlee with my experience on the matter, I have both scopes, and like it or not the Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5x20x50mm is a good scope.. I have no other experience with simmons scopes just that particular model. Skeetlee if you get one, please post your review of it be aware they sell out very quickly on that model.

I'll give the WTC a thumbs up. Theres nothing else out there in it's price range. At least the new ones are still made in the Phillipenes instead of China.

My brother inlaw that does'nt own firearms, though he owns telescopes and had never looked through a rifle scope in his life could'nt see any difference between the WTC and my Burris FFII 4.5-14. at the same powers. We did have to adjust the WTC's occular to focus the reticle for his eyesight.

I guess some people see things a little differently /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I've heard that the older models may not have been very high quality, but I've purchased 2 in the last year from Midway @ $99 each and I really like them. My brother-in-law has a $400 Bushnell and he likes my cheap scope better. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Hey, I have two 6.5-20X Leupolds and a Ziess 6.5-20X as well. Like it said, that Simmons is not in the same league as those, but for a C-note it worth every penny. I just need a new gun to put mine on. Knowing me, it wont be long.

thanks guys, i dont think i will buy one. i just couldnt beleive all the 5 star ratings on such a cheap scope. oh what the hell i might buy one! lee

i have one in a 3-12X 44AO, i've had it for almost 10 years now and it has been used and killed a bunch of critters. but i must say i'm not impressed with it. it is worth $100 i guess, but i would much rather spend the extra $100 and get a burris FFII or a leupold VX I.

mine is fine until you get to about 6x then it gets fuzzy...and at night it isn't worth a darn.

I had one on a 30-06 that I used to own. It was an okay scope for the money, but not in the same league as Leupold/Burris/etcetera. It did the job, and I never had a problem with fog or blurring. The one thing that I did hate about it was that it had very little eye relief--I had to be careful when shooting to avoid a nasty scope bite.

i have to follow on the heel's of Doyle..a few year's back i picked up a new rifle & couldn't sneak the cost of another scope..past the wife /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gifso i borrowed one of doyle's "whitetail" scope's..so i could at least shoot the rifle & get a feel for it & what really bothered me is the "eye" relief was so quirky you had to position yourself just right so you weren't looking thru the tube of the scope..i hate that dark circle /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gifanyway i don't doubt a few fella's get decent one's..i just wouldn't bet the farm on it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I got one 8 years ago.
It has performed perfectly everytime and I think it has very crisp and clear optics. I use it at night and it collects light great. CLear all the way aroung the edges, too. IMHO as good as any lupy or burris MY dad or I own. and half the price.

Eye relief is a little short. I totally agree!! But it makes me really settle in for a shot. Works for me.

Realistically I need to be able to see the target. I don't need to be able to see if the yotes has 10 or 11 different shades of red in its coat. Holds its point of aim and doesn't cost more than the gun.

By the way, I used this scope on 1/24/08 to plug a red fox at 607 yards (Rangefinder) at about 12:15 am. Not bragging but I think it is pretty good poke at night and the optics worked.

It is well worth 100 bucks!

Buy one!
