00 Buckshot on Coyotes

I going hunting this weeked at my inlaws. There have been several yote sightings in the last week, and they have them howling 100yds. from the house every night. I'm almost postive there is a family living within 300 yds of the house. The only problem is it is very thick with mosquites. I bought some 3 1/2 in. 00 buckshot last night at academy. The shells have 18 pellets. My question is what choke should I use for shots at 25+ yds? And how far should I shoot.

You need to shoot and pattern your gun to find out what choke to use,all shotguns pattern differently.
As far as distance I would say 45-50 yd at the most.
Do a search and you will find bunches of info.

Modified choke seems to be the best for buchshot loads.

Just curious as to why you wouldn't use a full choke? Isn't it supposed to hold a tighter pattern at more distance?

I bought some for my 10 guage. It patterned well with a full lead choke. It was horrible with the extra full lead only choke. It definitely threw enough pellets out to 60 yards to do the job with plenty of penetration.

You should be fine with a full choke. Your kill range will probably be about 40 yards with a 12 guage. The one thing with a shotgun is, keep putting pellets at 'em. You don't have to be quite so precise with those follow up shots, so make sure you get enough lead out there to do the job.

I notice a lot of people talk about using 00 buck and was thinking that 4 buck or 1 buck might be better. We can only use buckshot for deer in this part of Virginia so I have a lot of experience with buckshot and would think a smaller buckshot would get the job done with more shot.Full choke is what most people around here use with buckshot. Some gun shoot different size buckshot tighter so I would try all sizes. If you are going to use a shotgun for yote hunting you might want to buy a choke like Kicks chokes for what ever buckshot size you will use.

OO will for sure work, but #4 buck has more pellets (3" has 41 pellets)thus creating a denser pattern. This translates into more probable hits in the kill zone. This being said, OO will work and since you already bought it use it. Just do your self a favor and shoot some at paper to see how it patterns. Large OO shot is a very good killer if you can be assured you can get it into the kill zone. Coyotes kill zones aren't real big. CoyoteDoc1 gave some great advise. with a shotgun be ready for a quik follow up and don't hesitate to give it to him fast if he needs it. Wounded coyotes can get out of shotgun range fast.

In my experience, with a full choke and large shot ie 00 Buck, the shot is deformed going through the smaller tube. This causes it to loose its roundness and have flat spots on it, which in turn catch wind and cut out of the pattern. As was stated earlier, the only way to tell for sure from your barrel is to pattern it. For 00 buck I have gotten my best patterns with a Modified tube. as the shot size gets smaller such as #4 -6 shot the full chokes do better.

The above post says it all. I've read several articles and have done some testing. Modified for me. The articles lean towards modified choke as best overall for throwing buckshot. I'm sure someone else will swear by full chokes as the best. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Our 14" barrel Rem 870 Police shotguns come with a modified choke from the factory, instead of the open cyclinder as before. That barrel throws a nice patter of 00 buck to 40 yards on a silouhette target. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Works for me...................... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Have you seen Coyote Overdose? I speak from seeing my brother have to grab the rifle for the followup! LOL Once you've seen it happen so fast, you start preparing for it better.
