will a 1 in 8 twist in .22 CAL centerfire barrel,,mainly on the AR platform shoot the 50grn-55grn bullets,,like the V-Max with any degree of accuracy,,i have had people tell me the 50-55 grn bullets will shoot great in the 1 in 8 twist and i have had people tell me that it must be a 1 in 9 twist barrel to shoot the 50-55 grain pills,,they have said that the lightest bullet that will shoot in the 1 in 8 twist is 63 grains
does ANYONE have any ACTUAL experience with this situation
and not something they have heard or read about
Thank you
Bob

An 8" or 9" twist will usually shoot the light bullets with no problems. Those fast twists will make the bullets expand more violently on target. You certainly don't need that fast a twist to shoot 50-55gr bullets, a 12" or even 14" should shoot them accurately although with less expansion on target.

I shoot 50-55 gr in my 1-8 twist. Accurace is about 3/4 MOA from my gun. Have also shot the same loads from 1-9 twists with about the same results.

OhioBob: I have a AR 15 DPMS in a 1/8 twist and it will shoot 3/4 inch groups with 45-50 gr White box loads . Wal Mart Boxes .
I have been very pleased with it and I also have a 1/9 twist upper that I use for Varmint hunting (it's lighter to carry)when I'm walking and calling. they both shoot about the same and will really impress You how accurate they are.I have loaded up the 50gr vmaxes and they shot just like the 45 and 50 gr white Boxes.
I have never shot any of the Heavy bullets except the 63 gr. sierra I handloaded some of them and they shot very well out of the 1/8 heavy Bbl.
I am sure someone Younger and steadier can shoot smaller groups than I have shot with these , I am in my 60's and not as steady as I used to be but don't be mislead by rumors there are lots of Different types of Ammo out there just try them and good luck

well the twist's mentioned are in an AR barrel,,and i would use the heavier bullets for coyotes but the lighter 50-55 grn V-Max bullets for groundhogs and crows
Thanks
Bob

I shoot 50 grain vmax black hills and 52 grain hp also from blackhills and they both shoot well out of my 1 in 8 ar15. Heavy bullets shoot better but I shoot sub moa with the lighter ones.

Like other folks have said I have no problems with accuracy out of my 1-8 twist 20" hbar AR with the smaller grain bullets.

I've shot the following all with MOA being the worst most is just sub-MOA accuracy with 10 shot groups @ 100

Win White Box 45gr
Black Hills Reman. 50gr Vmax
Black Hills Reman. 52gr Match
Black Hills Reman. 55gr PSP
Black Hills Reman. 60gr Vmax

Handloads:
60gr Hornady Vmax BenchMark Powder
69gr Sierra Match King - Benchmark Powder, Might try a load with Varget as well.

I tend to stick with a little heavier bullets (60 gr) for hunting because there is a POI change I don't want to mess with between various bullet weights.

The 1 in 8 will shoot a larger variety of bullet weights better than the 1 in 9 for the most part in AR's. My 1 in 8's will shoot 3/4" or better 10-shot group averages with 40gr factory loads. I still don't know where folks keep coming up with the fast twist barrels won't shoot light bullets.

1 in 9's generally like 52's and 55's. Some will shoot a couple of other weights well too.

We have shot 52's, 55's and 75's out of our 1/8's with similar results. We currently shoot the 75's and love em. Are you looking to hunt coyotes with this gun? If so get the 1/8, it seems to be alot more versitale than the 1/9 and you can use the heavier bullets.

Take care,

Todd

Not to hijack the thread, But have any of you guys chrono'd the 75's out of your ar's. I am building a 223ai and spun it 8 with the sole intention of throwing the 75's. Thanks, Brad

Hey Brad,

I have not crono'd the 75's, the box says 2790 for the .223 load. I'll be honest with ya I am not a huge bullet/load nut, but they work wonders in the field. I would imagine speeding em up a bit would just make em better. They are slower than the 55gr bullets we shot in our 250's, but they hit about the same. Thats why we shoot em.

Take care,

Todd

Thanks for the info. I am putting together a bolt action 223ai. I am hoping for 3-3100 out of the 22" custom tube. I guess no matter what the numbers are, they will put a hurtin on some critters. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

i will be using the gun on coyotes and groundhogs,,i want to use heavier bullets on coyotes BUT i love using the 50 V-Max on groundhogs,,,and i do love the carnage produced by the V-Max
I KNOW NOTHING about the heavier bullets for coyotes,,but i figure i will read up on some AND hopefully get some good info from the members on this board about the heavier bullets.
Would there be a DRASTIC difference in the POI?,,for the 50grn V-Max and something in a 63-70 grn soft point or hollow point?
say out to 200 yds,,,or would it be minimal like 2"
these would be shot out of an AR if i ever get it
Thank you
Bob

ohiobob,

Sounds like the 1/8 would work well with the weight ranges of bullets you talked about. There will be an impact difference, but not a huge one. I would think a couple inches would be about all. Some of the most popular AR rounds are the 60gr vmax from black hills, and of course the Hornady 75's. Lots of guys use the lighter stuff, but if you have the option I would go heavy. Kinda puts the .223 into another level.

Take care and good luck

Todd
