10 gauge choke and 4 buck

what choke do you guys use with your 10 gauges at coyotes? Do any of you reload for the 10 gauge with 4 buck and what is your load. My local hunting store told me winchester quit making 10 gauge 4 buck and I only have a handful left.

yeah, 10gauge is losing ground.....i dont have one anymore, but that is a different yarn to tell...

1 reason is SAAMI pressures for commercial 10 gauge ammo are below that of 12 gauge 3.5" ammo.

another is the emergence of 12 gauge 3.5" ammo (hull capacity).

and finally the newer high density waterfowl loads (HD, Hevi_Shot, Xtended Range...) make the 3.5" 12 gauge more effective than it was when lead went bye bye....

.....that said , federal still makes a 10 ga. 3.5" buckshot load( 18 OO buck pellets) that is copper plated and buffered.
that would surely do the trick for you!
Best to you, ohio_hunter

mkeller72,

The best advice I can offer is to get the "Mighty 10"
load data book from Ballistic Products. It has some
very good loads for 10 gauge buck. Also, their custom
10 gauge wads, and loading materials(over shot cards,
felt discs, mica, etc.) help craft some pretty impressive
loads.

Yes I do load for my 10 gauge, but for liability issues,
I DO NOT load for other folk's 10 gauges.

As for the choke I use, I have tested all of the Browning
chokes, that came with my Gold 10, and a number of after
market chokes. I believe the "Full Lead Only" Browning
choke, and the "Tru-Glow" turkey choke(no longer in
production) were the two best on my buck loads, and pattern
board. I can't stress this strongly enough...Test your
loads with as many chokes as you can. Some will surprise
you as to how ineffective they are, and some will surprise
you how tight they are. Pattern boards separate the truth
from the BS. Also, with the BPI wads, sometimes the more
open chokes print some nice tight patterns. So try all
choke tubes, even though it may not make sense to try an
improved cylinder choke, for tight groups. Slamming a
bunch of soft buckshot into a tight choke can make for
some "funky" patterns. When one gets a friendly
combination of load, load components, and choke to come
together, some pretty impressive patterns start showing
up at the pattern board.

As for lack of availability of good 10 gauge load, from
the factory, it is a matter of economics. Gun manufacturers
have sold the public the 12 gauge 3.5" chamber, as "just
as good" as the 10 gauge 3.5". My testing doesn't support
the claims, but if I were limited to factory offerings,
then the claims may be valid. Anyway, to get the extra
effectiveness out of the 10 gauge, unfortunately the
factory ammo boys are forcing that to be done by hand
loaders.

Joel knows what he is talking about. He got me pointed in the right direction. Roll your own 10 gauge loads and no you will not need a reloader. Just a roll crimp die, overshot cards, and a hull holder plus the components.

I've spent the past week researching tubes and 10 gauge loads. My findings:

Commercial Loads -

Federal 2 1/4oz lead BB's $47 for 25 rounds. (Aable Ammo)
Federal 18 00 buck pellets $12 for 5 round (Scheels)

10 gauge choke tubes for Remington SP10

Patternmaster (Cabelas) full - $85
Wad Wizard (WadWizard.com) Terror Tube $80
Trulock (Ableammo.com) non ported full $37 ported full $47

I went with the Trulock choke and ordered the following from BPI

Roll crimp set
primed 10 gauge Federal hulls
Hull Holder with 10 gauge inserts
BPI LEAD BBB size nickel plated shot
overshot cards and wads
"mighty 10" gauge reloading manual

my goal is to produce 1 1/2 ounce loads around 1500 feet per second.

Thanks for the info. guys, after looking at the bpi site I saw alot of good products and am thinking of going that route. Have any of you tried the "F" buckshot when reloading. It looks one size smaller than the 4 buck but would increase your pellet count per load.
