165 grain for Mt Goat

What do you guys feel about a 165g Barnes-X bullet out of a 300 win mag for Mountain Goat? I'm going to northern BC on a last minute goat hunt and don't have time to work up a new load with, say a 180g bullet for my 300 win mag. My other choice is to use a 340 weathery mag with a 250g Barnes-X bullet. I can also take a moose or caribou which may influence the decision.

My take on this is use your normal load in the 300 you use on deer. It has been my experience that Barnes X bullets don't shoot through any of my guns. Best group was 1.5 inches at a hundred it deteriorated from there to over 3”. Like you say you don’t have time to work up a new load and this is maybe a once in a lifetime hunt. When I got my tag here in Washington I decided to go with my 7MM Rems best deer load a 139 Gr. Hornady over 68.2 Gr. of IMR4350. I got my goat. A shot at 75 yards and it dropped him on the spot. Lucky because it was steep and a long ways down I could have lost him. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks Jay! I have had very good results with Barnes-X. I can get a 3/4" group with my 300 and a little smaller, about 1/2" with a 250g out of of 340 wthby.
Congrats on your Mt Goat! It's great to hear you got one with the 7mm therefore as you mentioned, the 165g 300win mag should be suffucient.
Thanks again Jay!

Go with the 300 Win Mag. Sounds like it shoots great and that Barnes X bullet will for sure do the job. Even on moose and caribou. My son shot his caribou with his .270 at 300 yards with 150 grain bullets. It went through both lungs and exited the far side. The animal took 5 steps and expired.

Sounds like a fun hunt. If you need a meat packer, I will work for food! Good luck and have a great time.

If the X's will shoot out of your 300 Win Mag, go for it. The 165 grs. should be just the ticket. Good long-range flat shooter. I can't wait to see the pictures!!

Good Hunting,

Bob

I know it's a little late in my response but I ended up using the 300 win mag with a 165gr Barnes-X bullet. I ended up shooting a 9.5" billy on the 3rd day we hunted goats. One shot through the lungs and then he fell (jumped??) off the cliff and ended up in a tangle of trees about 1,500 feet below. After a 4 hour decent down the mountain, we found him. The skull was smashed but amazingly enough, the horns were hanging on by the skin. We made it back to camp at 12:00pm the following day.

I also shot a very old mountain caribou on the second to last day of the hunt. That was pretty uneventfull.

Thanks for all the help with the choice of bullets.
