17 Ackley Hornet (Cheapest Way)

What is the cheapest way to get a 17 AH?

My guess would to buy a 17 hmr barrel for a Thompson Contender and have it rechambered. That would be great, if I had a Contender. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I wish it were possible to rechamber a 17 hmr bolt action Savage. Probably would have a problem with chamber pressure. That is not possible to do is it?

The the 17 rimfire are .172 also. But a rimfire action will not stand the presure of even a hornet round. T/C makes a 17 ack hornet barrel, so why not just get one of them?

I built a 17 Ackley Hornet on a G2 Contender frame about a year ago. At that time, T/C did not offer it in one of their barrels. I tried the idea of the HMR barrel but for some reason was talked out of it by a gunsmith as well.

I went with an MGM barrel(Match Grade Machine out of Utah) for around $380-400, I don't remember for sure.

Since then I am in process of building another 17 AH on a Browning Micro Hunter A Bolt action.

If you're interested in buying my Contender, PM me. I don't need two of them.

Contender is the cheapest way probably. If not pick up a used Browning Micro Hunter, CZ 527, or Ruger 77/22 in 22 hornet and have it rebarreled to 17 Ackley Hornet. About $500 on top of what the used rifle sets you back. By far my favorite caliber and a real performer.

I just recently jumped on on the wildcat train with a 17AH. Actually, I bought the Contender G2 frame back in August. A friend of mine caught a special on G2 Muzzleloader frames and I picked one up with this in mind. Then I started looking for a Bullberry 17AH barrel and I found a really nice used one at a great price from a reputable person. I bought the dies from Midsouth. I got RCBS dies because I couldn't find Redding in stock anywhere.

I splurged on a Bullberry stock and got a double exhibition set.

I have several test loads ready, but haven't shot it yet because of the miserable cold weather here in Iowa.
