.17 caliber AR upper

Getting close to pulling the trigger on this one. Definitely going with a SS 1-9", not sure on length, though I want to stay between 18" and 22". It will be a coyote carry/calling rifle, not a PD gun. I'm thinking 20". I'm trying to strike a balance between something light enough to carry a swing and keeping some semblance of the performance of the cartridge. I'm not a velocity worshiper. Accuracy is king. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I had one in 17 Remington. Great shooter, no fur damage, (little itty-bitty hole in, massive internal damage, no exit). It shot great and I loved it, but it seemed like I was spending a lot of my time searching the brush for my ejected brass. Got a brass catcher from a 4m member on here. It worked perfectly, however I just couln't get used to using it. Sold that upper. I use the brass catcher(s) on other uppers.

One of my next projects will be either a 20 Practical or a 17-223. As opposed to the 20 Tactical, the 20 Practical is one pass through the sizing die, (which you have to do anyway), and load it up. No fire forming like the Tactical. I'm still looking at the 17-223 very hard as I loved my 17 Remington. Might have to build one of each in order to make a good comparison!

Good luck, the 17 is a great caliber, and ever better in an AR platform. I know a guy with an upper in 17 Remington Fireball, and he claims it is the "best" 17. My son and I both have bolt guns in 17 Remington for use when pelt prices are worth it.

Scott's group deal on 17 Remington's is about as good as I have seen. Might see what some of the guys shooting his guns have to say. SnowmanMo has one, do a search on some of his threads...

Are these 17cal uppers available or are they custom builds? I'm looking for a smaller/quieter round than the 204 for night hunting from 50-100yds. John

I am shooting my 25 grain bergers 3775 fps. With no pressure signs. I have some 30 grain bergers loaded up ready to try out.

I am loving my Specialized Dynamics .17 rem bull barrel flat top. I went with an 18in bull barrel, since I like the weight for offhand shots. The accuracy is fantastic, the cartridge is a great performer, and the gun functions flawlessly. Can't say enough good things about the combination. If I can't get it done with this combo, it's all my fault.
