17 Fireball ~ 17 Remington ***EXPLAIN***

Could you all please educate me on the difference between these 2 rounds?

... I mean, is it that significant? I really am getting the itch to try a 17 cal rifle with all the talk as of lately around here of them. Then they gotta go & throw the new 17 Hornet into the mix!

Really ... my head is starting to spin from all the 17 cal choices out there.

Can you all make it a bit more clearer for me?

Charlie~

Since you've mentioned their parent cases ... I have got to ask! This puts the 17 Fireball in the middle of the 17 cal spectrum that I've mentioned. Does this mean that the 17 Fireball might be my best choice for trying out a 17 cal for the very 1st time? Just curious.

Absolutely

Naturally it depends on what you want to do with it, but IMO, the 17FB is the best bang for the buck in the world of 17's.
The perfect "tweener" if ya know what I mean.

Good luck finding a fireball brand new unless you go with a Cooper or go custom. You can find used one every once in a while. Then you have to think about how many is "low round count" on the used one. Or why are they really getting rid of it. Acc.? Feeding issues? What?
I am in your same boat, want a fireball. I actually put the cart in front of the horse on this rifle. Got the dies, bullets, brass, and 250 rds or factory loaded remington fireball. No, gun yet due to options available in rifle brands that haven't been fired. All I can find is Cooper. I started saving for the Cooper 21 Phoenix and the started looking into the CZ 527 varminter in the 17 rem and just having the barrel set back and rechambered to the fireball through mr. Green out of PA. I just may go through that route and save several $$$$$. But really like that Cooper.

I really like the looks of the Remington CDL SF in 17 Fireball! Neat looking rifle. Just not wanting to regret not going with the 17 Remington or even possibly the 17 Hornet. Although, I'm pretty sure the Hornet is not for me.

Found a 17 Fireball VSSF barrel that I'm going to have reamed to a 17 Rem barrel is what I'm looking at. Getting the barrel next month.

Yea,,, the 17's aren't for everyone Pb, but trust me, they're worth the search.
For a FB that feeds properly and has the correct size magazine/bottom metal you can always do what I did and rebarrel a 527Amer in 221 to 17FB.
No muss, no fuss, and super accurate.

I built mine back when CZ's were still a bargain and PN barrels were half what they are today, but even with todays prices you'd still be quite a bit less than a Cooper and have a repeater (if that matters).

Not that there's anything wrong with a nice little Cooper.

Not that I'm aware of.
Remmy changed the position of the ejector plunger on the 700'S chambered in 17FB. I think they clocked the extractor a tich too but don't quote me.
My buddie's M7 (which is pretty much a 700 with a shorter bolt) feeds, ejects, and extracts fine.

EDIT; I know a couple of other guys with 700's (one's a CDL, the other's a SPS) that cycle fine too.

Not any feeding issues from the old factory ones, just feeding issues when they want to build one off of a Rem, Savage, CZ, with out using the proper bolt face. Some try the 223 Rem bolt face and run into issue with it not ejecting, same for the others. 221 action or 222 action and then do you build and it shouldn't give you issue. Or, just find a 17 fireball used and play with it.

Bolt face has nothing to do with it.

RePete,

Your CZ it sweat!!!!! That is what I am looking for! I am chubbing up seeing that thing.

That is the only bad thing about the Cooper is that it is a bolt fed rifle. But when you look at the workmanship, whooooooo cares!!!
I have my eye on a Phoenix 21 in a 17 fireball with gr/bl splatter stock and stainless that I cannot get out of my mind. I just need to get the money out of savings.
But, when your a rich teacher/coach with 3 kids and a wife going back to school like me.......gotta love the CZ.

Repete,
What is the main issue than when they build one off of the 223??? I want to learn as much as I can before I start off in the direction of putting together a 17 fireball.

I thought they had extractor issues when using the 223 bolt?

Just trying to learn more.

Another member on here told me that too. If you try too use a 223 bolt with a 17 FB that sometimes it would leave the ejected casing laying in the receiver, you would have to use a 221 FB bolt to correct the issue. PB you wouldn't believe the politicing I had to do to get that barrel. Just waiting till after Christmas to start this build, was wanting to build a VSSF clone in 17 REM. but I found a SA Accurate Innovations laminated stock I'm lookin at too.

There is a mod 7 CDL in 17 FB on 24hr campfire classifieds right now they are very sweet rifles I should know I have two of them
thumbup.gif
nice and light and with a 9 twist barrel I believe so you can shoot the 30gr if you want

Yes Charlie, as you know I have been a fan of CZ's for years and was even preaching them before ole IDBob sung their praises here on PM, May he RIP.

Here is a CZ527 I had built several years back. It's technically a 17 Mach IV, but the factory 17 FB shoots fantastic in it.

It wears a Pac-nor tube also.

I slimmed down the stock a little and re-checkered it.
