I am soon having a 17 fireball built from a Model 700 action...but saw this post on youtube and was a little puzzled... read the posters comment..............Thanks

Beats me Bama!!
But I have a .17 Fireball,Remington SPS,tossed the stock and put a bell and carlson stock on it.It is my favorite chuck gun by far!!! I have kills out to 408 yards in wind!!I have had great luck with Todd Kindlers projectiles,25 grain H.P.
Great round!!! Have fun and post some pics when you done!!

i believe the extractor was specifically placed for the Rem 700 17fb to get it to function properly. your best best would be to find one and have it customized. whether your action will or wont work will be answered by more knowledgable people to come im sure.

good luck

Didn't watch the you tube clip and don't have to.
I can tell you for positive that Remington repositioned the ejectors in all of their rifles chambered in 17FB in an attempt to solve the problems they experienced with "Some" repeating rifles chambered in 221FB. Seems that about half of em would flip the case around backwards and leave it in the action instead of tossing it out.
Personally, I'd build on a 700 or M7 chambered in 17FB.

Better yet, just rebarrel a CZ chambered in 221 and don't worry about feeding/ejection issues.
The 700 action's way to big for that little cartrige anyway. IMO

As usual, JMO

FWIW,,, the extractors on 17FB rifles are clocked a few degrees too.
At least the M7 we looked at is. 700's probably the same.

Thanks for all the inputs.....I wasn't aware of this problem RePete, which is why i'm researching as much as I can before I act.....This may change my thinking because it may be a bit more difficult to access a Fireball action as compared to a standard SA 700 which are pretty easy to come by here.....I guess I will do some thinking on this situation but still want to build a .17 of some kind modeled on the Model 7 Predator.... I just want something fur "friendly"......I see that the .17 is your friend RePete just curious what you are armed with????

Don't blame you for doing your homework "before" jumping in, and I applaud your desire to save Fur.

My 17FB's a semi custom, but my buddy has a M7 CDL that after we pillar bedded, floated the barrel, and changed the trigger, shoots pretty dang good. I also know a guy that bought a SPS that separated cases in factory ammo due to a very dangerous (IMO) head-space issue, so it's the usual crap-shoot with newer Remmy's.
Again, I'd just cut to the chase, and rebarrel a 527. No worries about buying new stocks and triggers, although you may or may not be able to live with the protruding magazine and high rings. But just like the Remmy,,, both problems can be solved with money.

I have a 17FB built by Bob Green on a mod 7 that started life as a CDL 17FB, he trued up the action put on a new Pacnor barrel, Jewel trigger and bedded it in a HS stock. It feeds and ejects flawlessly it shoots pretty good to.

I have a friend who had the same done to an original .223 Rem 700 action. IIRC, it too was built by Bob Green and he installed a Sako style extractor to make the 221 FB/17 FB case eject properly.

Yep,,, Rich's rifle is a dandy, but it was built on a 17FB.

On the other hand, if Bob Green says he can make a regular 700 feed and eject the round, I believe him.
He has a reputation for being able to make rifles feed flawlessly, and his action/chambering work is second to none.

Still think the 700's to big though.
Model seven,,, maybe.

Luck

Mine was built on a 221FB M700 before there many 17FB models to choose from, works fine. Bob does great work and would be the guy I look at for a build. Didn't do my 17FB but did build my last three rifles. Great guy who does very nice work with great turnaround times.

pulled the bolt on factory 700 17fb and .223 and see no difference on the ejector or extractor locations????

the fb is probably 2yrs old maybe early production???

don't know how it ejects as I bought it new and never have shot it.

ran some 17fb through the magazine and chamber of my 788/222 and they feed fine just don't know if they would eject/extract properly as the 17fb won't headspace/chamber up with the extractor in the 222. Has anyone had or heard of a fb on a 788 action???? I am hesitant to pull the barrel on a very accurate 788/222 if it won't feed or eject properly. where are youooo REPETE!

Personally, I would go with a 700/722 action over a 788 for a conversion.

I think your stock options are better.

And those 788/.222s flat out shoot. I know mine did.
