.17 HMR ammo for coons

I want to order some of my 17hmr ammo in bulk soon I use it for fox and coons mostly. I took it coon hunting last year and had some mixed results. I had 2 magazines of different ammo but couldn't remember which was which. I know it was cci tnt and cci game points. One of them didn't really do much I was getting all perfect hits and it didn't really phase the coon. Then I switched to the other mag and it was like each one after that got struck by lightning bang flop not even a twitch. I cant remember which one did what there's no way of telling the difference once out of the package without weighting them I suppose. The reason I had 2 different rounds was I only had a small handful left of the TnT just couldn't remember which mag it was in.

My gun digests the CCI tnt and game points the same there's only .25" different in the POI vertically. It also shoots Vmax very well also but its hard to come by by me and cci I can buy right at walmart 10 minutes away but vmax I have to drive to a big name store in the city or one of the gun shops even farther out.

What do you guys use out of your 17hmr for coons. I'm gonna order in bulk off line so even if Vmax is what most use with good results I'll just order 500 of them and re zero.

I have shot quite a few with the 17 grain vmax. Never had a problem. I used to think coons were a tough animal to kill back in my 22 rimfire days but the HMR has changed my thinking on that.

that almost seems backwards

Think about it. At close range the V-max and Tnts are to explosive, you don't get the penetration you need for coon sized varmints. The 20gr. XTP was designed for cntrolled expansion like a big game bullet. Out pasted 100yds. the V-max and TNTs go more controlled expansion so you get the penetration. The XTPs don't expaned all that great out past 100yds.

I guess that makes sense maybe it was the 20gr game points I was dropping them with and not the TNT. I didn't see any splashes or even blood for that fact I didn't skin them out my buddy did it was the last trip of the year for me I left for Kuwait the next morning well 2 mornings after the day after was spent saying bye to my wife....So I didnt see the damage done to the coons on the insides I don't think any of them passed threw unless it was a tiny hole on the other side as well which was my concern that the heavy ones might have done.
